Program management and executive production of the HARLEM CHILDREN’S ZONE’S archival project which includes a full-length documentary, a pictorial history and a book that captures the organization’s transition from the Rheedlen Centers for Children & Families to the Harlem Children’s Zone.

Provide operations, program and strategic management support to the leadership of the CAMPAIGN FOR BLACK MALE ACHIEVEMENT. Formulate proposals and reports to funders on behalf of this national organization that seeks to improve life outcomes for young men and boys of color. Thought partner to the CEO and the executive team on several projects including the Health and Healing Strategies program.

Served on a team with evaluators from Mathematica Policy Research to produce two HARLEM CHILDREN’S ZONE Healthy Harlem issue briefs (March 2018). The Impact of Healthy Harlem on the Body Mass Index and Weight Status of Adolescents after Two and Three Years and The Impact of Healthy Harlem on Student Fitness Outcomes after Two and Three Years.

Greater New York City Area

Created and managed a new HCZ program area with an annual budget of $12 million and a staff of 250. Gave presentations to the board of directors and the larger field of childhood obesity, built relationships with outside organizations, hired and trained staff, oversaw an evaluation team, executed budgets and built an agency culture of health and wellness. HCZ’s health and wellness initiatives include the asthma program, teen health, agency-wide food services, the Armory and the Healthy Harlem program. Serving 7,000 students and 3,000 adults at 27 program sites annually, Healthy Harlem seeks to fight obesity and promote healthy choices through nutrition education, healthy food options, fun physical activities and parent engagement. This initiative grew from a strategic plan in 2011 to full program scale in 2015. Two issue papers capture Healthy Harlem’s success.

Managed the operation of HCZ’s two Beacon programs, the Geoffrey Canada Community Center and the housing development sites that serve 5,000 children and adults annually. Supervised five program directors as well as provided indirect supervision to 525 full and part-time staff. With an annual budget of $10 million, established systems to ensure quality assurance, program monitoring, fiscal oversight, resource management, staff evaluations and data assessment. Reviewed for authorization all personnel matters, petty cash usage and program purchase requisitions. Worked with HCZ’s development office on fundraising events, site visits and narrative reports.

Provided the administration, coordination and evaluation of all human resource functions. Assisted senior managers and program directors in carrying out their responsibilities on personnel matters. Maintained a human resources system that met agency personnel needs. Assisted managers in the annual review, preparation and execution of HCZ’s wage and salary program. Served as Affirmative Action Officer and EO Liaison and as a thought partner to senior leadership on all personnel issues.

Coordinated all HCZ activities in the comprehensive, community building initiative that initially focused on a 24-block area in Central Harlem. Worked with all of the program directors to create a network of services that provided family support, job training, affordable housing, quality education and youth development activities. While HCZ began as a project of the Rheedlen Centers for Children and Families, it eventually grew to become the name of the organization and the work expanded to 97-blocks.

Worked with the CEO to oversee fundraising, new program development, community-based advocacy, program documentation and media relations. Provided technical assistance to groups both locally and nationally seeking to replicate its school-based model - the Countee Cullen Community Center Beacon.

Responsibilities included generating, organizing and disseminating information on community-based youth programs with a focus on the Beacons, school-based community centers in high-poverty and crime areas in New York City. Provided technical assistance to the staff of the centers through the coordination of workshops and training sessions. Conducted interviews, observed program activities and assisted in the preparation of documentation reports.
