Being a bilingual dental hygienist gives me the advantage to promote oral health and well-being to patients, in both English and Spanish. Seeing my patients smile without being embarrassed of their teeth fills my heart with happiness. When patients return for their re-care visits and I can see a huge difference in their oral health, I experience the most rewarding feeling as a dental hygienist.Continuing education helps me stay on top of the latest dental research and new technologies that can be incorporated in the practice and patient care. Treating patients with respect and empathy helps me gain their trust and mutual respect. Applying active listening skills allows me to understand patients concerns and needs. Communicating clearly and in a friendly manner helps build rapport with patients and can help avoid future misunderstandings and even lawsuits. Within my practice I follow office policies and collaborate with colleagues to maintain a friendly and respectful working environment. I constantly demonstrate the ability to being dependable by thoroughly completing patient treatment and working well under stress. Accepting constructive criticism helps me become a better clinician and team player.Becoming the Student Ambassador for the Dental Hygiene Association (SADHA) during the Southwestern College Dental Hygiene program allowed me to witness the power of unity, presence, and ultimately having our voice heard through our votes. The California Dental Hygiene Association (CDHA) House of Delegates instilled the need and want, in me, to become a change agent to protect and uphold the scope of dental hygiene practice. As a clinician, I abide by the State Dental Practice Acts and the American Dental Hygienist’s Association Code of Ethics. As a dental hygienist I can demonstrate the principles of ethical behavior toward patients and staff by advocating the commitment of veracity to all and non-maleficence to patients. I will always maintain patient records and personal information confidential and private. During treatment planning I clarify and thoroughly explain patient informed consent by demonstrating trans-cultural communication skills to ensure all patients from different cultures are granted a better understanding of their treatment plan and expected outcomes. I will provide the highest standard of care to all patients no matter their culture, race or religion.
