She was a panel member on the REF2014 where her knowledge and experience of multiple research approaches (RCTs, mixed-methods and qualitative designs) was highly valued.Marlene is currently Head of the Centre for Maternal, Fetal and Infant Research at Ulster University where she was awarded the first Personal Chair for Midwifery research in Ireland in 2006. In 2007, she established the Doctoral Midwifery Research Society (funded by the Northern Ireland Health and Social Care Research & Development Department) In 2001, Marlene was instrumental in the launch of the RCMs research journal; “Evidence Based Midwifery” and continues as Editor. She has also served as a member of the RCM Council and was a Director in their Board of Trustees as well as being appointed to the RCM Virtual Birth Campaign which later became the Normal Birth Campaign. Other research appointments included the RCM Education and Research Advisory Board, the RCM Research Standing Committee (Chair) and the Academy of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting. She was Chair of the interdisciplinary European Medicines Agency Task and Finish Group on Medication in Pregnancy. Marlene is currently Co-Chair of the IINHR Research Ethics Committee at Ulster and has considerable experience of multi-centre trials across Europe and the conduct of sensitive research in countries such as Jordan and Taiwan. Marlene has over 250 publications In 2011, Marlene and Professor Ros Bryar published the second edition of the only theory book on applied midwifery research in the world: “Theory for Midwifery Research and Practice” . In addition, she has taken 24 PhD students to completion, assessed 12 external PhD candidates and has obtained external R&D funding for PhD studentships. Show less
