As one of the two Coordinators for Brown’s Interpreter Aide Program, I recruit potential Spanish-English interpreters from Brown's undergraduate and graduate classes to volunteer at Rhode Island Hospital. I host informational sessions about Brown's Interpreters Aide Program, administer language proficiency exams, grade exams, determine who to offer interviews to, and interview those chosen. I, along with the other coordinator, decide those most qualified to be trained as medical interpreters by the Interpreter Services Office at Rhode Island Hospital.

I meet one on one with Brown undergraduates to discuss academic strategies, skills, courses, or other academic questions/concerns. Topics can include but are not limited to finding one's optimal learning style, developing specific studying skills such as reading, writing and taking notes, completing problem set in STEM courses, or preparing for papers and exams. In addition to academics, I provide resources and support for emotional, physical, and mental well-being as well as assist in first-year students’ transition to college. I also facilitate workshops on a wide range of academic and personal experiences at Brown.

I work with Professor Gregory Elliott in Brown University’s Sociology Department to discover undergraduate students' experience as Brown students. I recruited volunteers to complete a confidential online survey in which they agree or disagreed with statements about themselves as Brown students. A randomly selected subsample was then contacted for a follow-up interview, which I conducted using an interview schedule approved by Brown’s Institutional Review Board while audio recording for later transcription by another research assistant. After all the data was collected, I prepared the online survey data for analysis, transcribed interviews, and analyzed the data using SPSS and SDATA.

I study whether the exposure of varying pH in water result in cognitive deficits in larvae zebrafish as well as the effects of PCBs on zebrafish cognitive development. My responsibilities include making egg water, collecting eggs, raising larvae, and caring for adult zebrafish. I test and monitor the water in the fish tanks for ammonia levels, pH, and temperature. I prepare and run video recorded experiments, make agarose molds, and image larvae and eggs on a microscope. I analyze and clean data using Python and ImageJ to organize in Microsoft Excel. I have also written out detailed instructions on how to use the Python program and recruited new research assistants who I now train.

As a Women’s Peer Counselor, I lived in a first-year dorm to advise/support neighboring first-year students with college concerns. Aside from general college related questions, I provided resources related to sexual health, gender, identity, and feminism. I filed incident reports when appropriate (such as injury, rule violation, altercation, and complaints). I was even commended on my incident report writing skills by being told by a Community Director that the first one I wrote was the best incident report she had ever read. I led a workshop every semester open to the Brown community to discuss issues such as sexual assault/harassment, Title IX, and emotional and mental self-care.

I supervised workers to ensure a smooth-running shift. I would log the workers' hours and called them when they were tardy or absent to their shift. I'd write commendations when workers did an exemplary job, accident reports when a mishap occurred, and formal and informal warnings when rules were broken. I restocked items and noted items that needed to be ordered more of. I prepared and cooked food as well as provided customer service. In addition, I handled opening and closing duties alone.

GoPeer offers low-cost tutoring opportunities since tutors can usually be a financial burden on families. I tutor K-12 (and sometimes undergraduate) students in various subjects including chemistry, math, Spanish, English, ACT and SAT preparation, and neuroscience. I schedule tutoring sessions with students and their parents, manage a profile, and communicate with clients through the online platform. This involved interacting with them through phone, text, email, Skype, social media, and in person. I would ensure they knew their intended college’s deadlines for paperwork and helped them submit everything on time. I continuously updated a student interaction log and submitted hours to AmeriCorps weekly. Each summer, I created a useful tool for the college advisors who are at those high schools during the school year: an SAT course lesson plan for students one summer and a pamphlet for parents of first-generation college students the next.

I would obtain and deliver ordered goods/merchandise to Brown University students through a startup phone app called Fetchum.

I provided customer service while working either in the concession stand, box office, post, or as a theater usher. I operated a computerized cash register and ran transactions. I prepared customers' orders, restocked items, provided maintenance, and reorganized stock. I was commended for my work and rewarded a raise every quarter and was awarded Employee of the Month within a year of my employment.

The summer after my first year of college, I participated in the Atlantis Project Fellowship in Ponferrada, Leon in Spain. The Atlantis Project allows premedical students from the US help international doctors improve their English-speaking skills while they learn about their intended career. The program I selected was a three-week medical internship in which I shadowed doctors for about 40 hours/week in Hospital del Bierzo. Specialties I shadowed in include general surgery, orthopedic surgery, urology, radiology, oncology, pediatrics, pulmonology, OB/GYN, rheumatology, and internal medicine. I observed patient-doctor interactions and translated between Spanish natives and other Fellows.
