As a QI specialist at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), I assist with tracking and reporting UDS and HEDIS measures on a monthly basis for breast cancer screening, cervical cancer screening, BMI screening and follow-up, diabetes control, hypertension control, depression screening, statin therapy, and many other population health indicators. At the end of the calendar year all of these measures are reported to the federal government and heath insurance plans. Using data analysis and excel skills such as VLOOKUP are a critical part of my job to evaluate what the data says and which patients are due for certain preventive screenings, lab test, procedures, etc. Ultimately, this is used to offer acute and long-term recommendations and establish new interventions/workflows for providers and clinical staff to improve APLA's measure rates.

As an intern in the quality improvement department at L.A. Care Health Plan, I assisted with disparity analysis by calculating statistical significance using Z-test and Fischer test by race/ethnicity, SPA, spoken language, etc. The rates that were analyzed included behavioral health, cancer screenings, and maternal and child health HEDIS measures. I also assisted with writing a letter to hospital administrators to recommend best practices for scheduling post-partum appointment visits to improve post-partum appointment attendance among Black birthing parents.

The Women's Health Initiative is one of the largest ongoing public health research studies designed for improving our understanding of post-menopausal women's health. The outcomes unit is in charge of collecting self-reported outcomes and adjudicating specific outcome cases such as cancer diagnoses, cardiovascular events, and osteoporotic fractures. This job consist of assisting the outcomes unit in obtaining participant information such as medical records, death certificates, updated addresses, self reported outcomes, contacting and engaging with study participants, identifying outcome cases for further investigation and adjudication, and entering data into WHIX, a large database that securely stores participant information.In April 2021, I worked on a mini project with Garnet Anderson to create a literature review that consists of examining disparities and risk factors for cardiovascular disease within the Women's Health Initiative through published research.

As a research assistant in Sue Biggins lab, I worked on a few mini projects with Jake Herman who is a postdoctoral researcher in the Basic Sciences division. During this job, I used scientific techniques such as PCR, cell culture, gibson assembly, digest, western blotting, protein gel extraction, and minipreps to conduct experiments and better understand the human kinetochore. I also learned troubleshooting skills for unanticipated experimental results and how to professionally present experimental results. As a lab aide, I created all the solutions, buffers, and prep for lab members experiment materials through sterile technique which is important for lab members efficiency in lab experiments.
