Ecological Restoration Intern

Rincon, New Mexico, United States

The Rincon Ecological Restoration Project is setting a precedent of climate solutions in the Southwest and Chihuahuan Desert; the big picture is that by modifying the natural landscape using the resources found in the land we may restore the lush grasslands and healthy arroyos that for thousands of years was home to rich ecosystems throughout our now arid desert. Our awesome team of self-proclaimed "Climate Cowgirls and Cowboys" have dedicated their time and love for nature to camping in the field and coordinating like hormigas to build erosion prevention features such as stonelines across the contour of the watershed, media lunas, and rock walls that work as dams smoothing the momentum of water that would otherwise erode the arroyos taking with it excess sediment into the Rio Grande. Using stones, boulders, and our favorite, basalt rock, we install them as walls to prevent floods and filter sediment on areas inside the arroyos where we have measured and surveyed as key indicators of rising water momentum. As the sediment builds up against the rockwalls dormant seeds of native grasses begin to sprout without the risk of being eroded, the more this occurs the better absorption new soil will have, therefore adding a secondary component of flood prevention and opportunity for more vegetation to thrive. In the field, you might hear words like "BAR" and "TAR" meaning someone has found a big ... rock or simply appreciating "now THATS a rock!". With hotter temperatures and less rain upon us due to El Niño monsoon season making a breaking record introduction, we may not see the results of our work for years to come, however, there is no better time to integrate symbiotic climate solutions, especially in a sensitive ecosystem like our beloved Chihuahuan Desert!

Field Organizer

El Paso, Texas, United States

As a Field Organizer in our current Climate Charter campaign I have been able to mobilize voters, inspire residents and citizens of El Paso, and spread awareness about the environmental issues our city faces! My favorite part of this work is the smiles and excitement in people's eyes when they hear that there are committed community members advocating for a more energy independent, climate leader, and water intelligent city.
