As Chief Conservation Officer (CCO) I lead a staff of 600 and a team of five senior direct reports, including the Deputy Chief Conservation Officer, Chief Scientist, Managing Directors for Global Policy, Community Building, North America and Latin America & Caribbean. Audubon's Conservation team is comprised of 22 state and regional offices, 10 focus Country offices, 32 Conservation Action Centers, and Conservation Initiative teams.The CCO position requires me to serve as a strategic leader, advisor and integrator throughout the Audubon Society. I lead overall strategy and implementation of Audubon’s national Conservation Strategies, Policy, Science, and International teams and programs and integrate strategy across these teams and throughout our Network. In a highly matrixed and distributed organization, my role as CCO requires that I must be an excellent and flexible collaborator, able to draw upon and help steer the talents of Audubon’s outstanding staff in our national and field programs and inspire and mobilize the passions of its vast bipartisan grassroots network. As CCO I also serve as a member of the Executive Team where I am a key partner in helping to design and develop Audubon’s next Strategic Plan. In my role, I report directly to the CEO, Dr. Elizabeth Gray.

Provide executive leadership and strategic direction to Audubon’s market-based regenerative, bird-friendly grasslands initiative. The Conservation Ranching Initiative spans 20 states, more than 3,500,000 acres and over 130 private ranchers and growing rapidly.

Currently serving as a member of Audubon’s Executive Team, and National Leadership Group and overseeing the organization’s operations and conservation programs in North and South Dakota.

Multiple state regional program of the National Audubon Society, headquartered in Fargo, North Dakota. In his nine years as Executive Director, Marshall has increased the budget by 5000%, while streamlining, focusing program delivery, and establishing a $5.5m endowment fund. As chief fundraiser for the Audubon Dakota program, Marshall has a proven record of building and optimizing high level, donor-centric relationships that benefit organizational mission. Marshall has led the fundraising and leveraging of more than $50m since 2017, directly impacting more than 500,000 acres of habitat.At the site level, Marshall manages all aspects of Audubon's two working ranches in the state, totaling more than 5,000 acres of grassland and wetland habitat. Marshall led implementation of a $400,000 bird-friendly grazing infrastructure project at both properties. The resulting infrastructure increased the value of the properties, and enabled Audubon to partner with local producers for the first time in 25 years, and ultimately led to higher quality nesting habitat for ducks, grassland birds and other wildlife. Additionally, thanks in large part to these decisive actions, earned income for the program has increased by 510% through new grazing and farm project leases.Regionally, Marshall develops and implements working lands conservation projects aimed at increasing habitat availability for target bird and wildlife species, which benefit private landowners and producers. Most notably, Marshall has worked with his team to build and implement Audubon's Conservation Ranching Program in the Dakotas, one of the most ambitious market-based working lands program in the country.Additional accomplishments under Marshall's leadership include the successful design, implementation and management of the Urban Woods & Prairies Initiative. This project, launched in 2013 by Audubon Dakota and its local partners has preserved nearly 1,500 urban acres, across five cities, managed for wildlife.

Provide full fiduciary supervision for the Trust, a $44m entity, with an annual budget of $4m. From its inception, the Trust has played a role as facilitator between agricultural and conservation interests. In addition to facilitating and funding sound, on-the-ground conservation of natural resources, its goal is to identify common issues, create dialogue, and resolve conflicts. Along with its agricultural and conservation partners, the Trust advocates for recognition, appropriate development and protection of North Dakota's unique natural resource values. It promotes productive use of private agricultural lands and private property rights that result in long-term enhancement and protection of private lands. It promotes effective use of North Dakota's public lands both for agriculture and recreation.
