Project Engineer - Direct Air Capture

Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom

North-East of Scotland DAC Pre-FEEDThe engineering study set out to deploy a first of a kind facility capable of capturing 0.5-1 million tonnes of CO2 from ambient air using technology provided by Carbon Engineering. The CO2 would then be sent for permanent storage at an offshore injection site by the Acorn Transport and Storage network. During the study I provided critical review of deliverables issued by the engineering contractor and the technology provider, and contributed technical insight to project framing workshops. In addition I led site screening and selection activities to establish the optimal location for the plant. This required working closely with the environment and consenting consultants to understand the previously unfamiliar impact of the technology on its local surroundings, and supporting commercial activities with landowners. I also evaluated the critical utilities supply of power and water. Storegga Engineered Carbon RemovalsThe ECR business was established to accelerate the deployment of DAC and other negative emissions technologies in global markets, in synergy with Storegga’s CO2 sequestration projects and expertise. I supported the shaping of the business’s playbook and in defining it’s position in the value chain. Within my role as Project Engineer, I completed technical studies and cost estimates for deploying DAC in various geographies, engaged with technology providers and completed research to develop our understanding of the carbon removals policy landscape and status of technology development.

Energy Transition Engineer

Banchory, Scotland, United Kingdom

Acorn CCS FEED – Facilities EngineerDuring the Front-End Engineering Design phase (Define), I continued to provide technical assurance of engineering deliverables (process, pipeline and flow assurance disciplines) from the owner’s side. I also presented a project overview at the 2021 SPE workshop on Offshore CCUS.During the FEED study, I completed a process engineering secondment at Costain, the engineering contractor. Here, I a produced a design (Aspen HYSYS), for a waste heat recovery system enabling the energy consumption of the amine carbon capture equipment to be significantly reduced. Additionally, I prepared process flow diagrams, material data sheets and schedules. https://theacornproject.uk/Acorn Shipping – Facilities EngineerThe shipping study considered import of CO2 through Peterhead Port using liquid CO2 carriers for onward transport to the Acorn CCS hub. I reviewed deliverables produced by the engineering and shipping consultants. This allowed findings to be summarised in a report issued to the grant funding providers. BEIS Cluster Sequencing Scottish Cluster (Track-1)The Cluster Sequencing competition was set out by the UK Government to deploy 20-30 million tonnes per annum of CCS capacity by 2030 across 4 clusters. I prepared bid sections across both Phase 1, which focused on CO2 transport and storage network, and Phase 2, for the emitter projects. This included managing the environmental consultant who prepared a lifecycle assessment (LCA) for the Acorn Capture facility. The Scottish Cluster achieved “Reserve” status during this bid, providing a preferential status for the more recently announced Track-2 competition.https://www.thescottishcluster.co.uk/

Energy Transition Engineer

Banchory, Scotland, United Kingdom

Acorn CCS Project Pre-FEED (Concept Select) – Facilities EngineerI completed both in-house engineering studies as well as technical assurance of engineering deliverables (PFDs, P&IDs, cost estimates) provided to Storegga from project contractors. The project scope covered the full CCS infrastructure chain, from carbon capture facilities at a brownfield site (St Fergus Gas Terminal) to CO2 transport through pipelines to an offshore injection site in the North Sea. I supported decision making by delivering technical reports on:• capture technology selection• development of a CO2 purity specification• CO2 conditioning technologies for dehydration and the removal of oxygen • suitability of internal pipeline coatings for liquid phase CO2 transport.https://theacornproject.uk/SECARB Offshore (South-East Regional Carbon Storage Partnership: Offshore Gulf of Mexico)With Storegga I joined the project in a consultancy role, performing techno-economic modelling (TEM) of potential offshore CO2 storage developments in the Gulf of Mexico, with emphasis of reuse on legacy oil and gas infrastructure. I evaluated case studies at the Cognac, Petronius and Horn Mountain fields and presented findings at the annual partnership conference.https://www.sseb.org/programs/offshore/

Graduate Research & Development Engineer

Rotherham

The TSS Rotherham plant produces polymer composite bearings for a wide range of industries, including: offshore, marine, renewables. In my role, highlights included:• statistical process control (to enable plant optimisation)• materials analysis (mechanical testing, simulation of product environments) • research into the design of instrumented ‘smart’ bearings
