Duties include:• Producing quality writing which is accurate, fair and complete• Meeting story deadlines• Covering public meetings (town board, school board and others) and other events, including sports; and police, fire department and other beats as assigned• Writing feature stories and in-depth reports; topics could include business and sports and recreation• Helping with copy editing and processing press releases• Taking photos• Writing for and taking photographs for ... special editions, under the supervision of the special editions editor• Proofreading• Being proficient in InDesign and assisting with pagination as needed• Covering for the editor during vacations or other absences• Other duties as needed, including loading content to web. Expected to:• Adhere to a journalism code of ethics• Be familiar with and use AP and CCT style• Keep regular office hours• Reply in a timely manner to voice mail and e-mail messages• Keep an organized, uncluttered desk and work area• Process e-mail daily and keep inbox empty• Monitor area and state news and relevant Web sites in order to stay informed• Work with the editor and Publishing Co. staff members to improve writing and other skills and quality of the paper• Call or visit sources each week to determine what The Times should be covering• Work with the editor in coming up with story ideas• Represent The Times in a professional manner in the community• Be a part of the community by “being out and about” and being aware of what is happening• Support co-workers who could benefit from the news reporter/staff writer’s expertise in writing, technology or other areas• Occasionally communicate with editors and reporters at our sister papers about stories * While not required, the reporter is encouraged to give back to the community through volunteering with an organization or two of his/her choice.
