Marta B. Afonso Email and Phone Number
Marta B. Afonso holds a PharmD (2012), and PhD in Pharmacy, speciality in cellular and molecular biology (2017), both from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universidade de Lisboa. Marta Afonso's PhD work provided the first major insights in depicting the role of necroptosis, an immunogenic cell death pathway, in liver cell injury in vitro, in vivo and in patients with chronic liver diseases, while critically evaluating the therapeutic potential and eventual adverse events resulting from necroptosis inhibition. During her PhD, Marta Afonso was visiting research trainee in Dr. Yuan's lab at Harvard Medical School, MA, USA, which is the renowned laboratory that discovered necroptosis. Marta Afonso also contributed to the unveil of novel signalling circuits regulated by bile acids and microRNAs in the liver. Marta Afonso was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship to investigate innovative therapies and technologies in precision oncology, followed by a contract as junior Postdoc researcher to find emerging biomarkers, targets and therapies for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. In 2021, Marta Afonso was awarded a CEEC contract after a very competitive process. Since September 2022, she is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universidade de Lisboa, and develop her research activities focused on studying the interplay between cell death, metabolism and immune cell activation in the control of cancer stem cell biology and gastrointestinal malignancies development at iMed.ULisboa. Overall, Marta Afonso has published as first author original research papers, book chapters, review articles and editorials in major international peer review journals, such as the Gut, Hepatology, Journal of Hepatology or Cell Death and Differentiation. Finally, she has assumed the supervision or co-supervision of several undergraduate, master and PhD students, while also being member and examiner of the jury of Master and PhD degree thesis in different universities.
