When my son was taking improv acting classes, there was a phrase they lived by that embodied the cooperative spirit, and it was to find a way to always say "yes, and..." when brainstorming or finding cooperative solutions in any arena (like acting or code pairing). Not "no, but", not even "yes, but". Martha is a "yes, and" person, more so than most people I've ever met. She's the kind of person that if you brought a coding problem to her, even though her suggestions might end up making you say "Oh, I didn't think of that. I'll adapt what I've got to do it that way instead!", she made the entire interaction collaborative, rewarding, and a mutual building of ideas and knowledge, whether it was actual code pairing or PR review, rather than just handing down knowledge. This is why she was able to be a good technical manager well beyond knowing all the nuts and bolts really well. Having great tech skills is really only half of being a great developer or manager of developers: unless you're working all by yourself, your value is largely measured by how much you raise the team, and as both a manager and a coder, she did that for our team. And as a people manager, she gave me as much opportunity as I needed to talk about how my work was going. She always made me feel like I was part of the team, that my feelings and opinions were valid, and that the company valued me both professionally and personally. I really had fun working with Marta.
