About Marten Düring

As an Assistant Professor in Digital History at the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH), my work focuses on the transformative impact of digitization and computational methods on historical research. With a PhD in contemporary history, I thrive in interdisciplinary environments, collaborating with social scientists, computer scientists, engineers, designers, and developers. My research focuses on integrating historical thinking with novel computational methods and software design. I specialize in network analysis, exploring its value for historians through various projects. The first Impresso project (2017-2020), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation under the Sinergia funding programme, developed a scalable architecture for processing Swiss and Luxembourgish newspaper collections. It created the Impresso web application, featuring powerful search, filter, and discovery functionalities based on semantic enrichments aimed at the historical research community. As a Co-PI, I had the pleasure to work with my colleagues Maud Ehrmann (EPFL) and Simon Clematide (University of Zurich) and a team of NLP experts, designer and historians. The ongoing second Impresso project (2023-2027), funded by both the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Luxembourg National Research Fund, envisions a comprehensive connection between media archives across modalities, time, languages, and national boundaries. This project involves building, enriching, integrating, and analyzing a corpus of historical newspaper and radio sources. It produces interfaces for exploratory, data-driven study of historical media and contributes original historical research under the theme of “influences.”I also play a leading role in the Historical Network Research Community, which I co-founded in 2009. This community fosters collaboration among historians, digital humanists, and scientists, promoting network-related methods for historical analysis. As a founding editor of the Journal of Historical Network Research, I contribute to publishing pioneering research that merges social network analysis with historical studies, advocating for open access to all content.
