About Martha Lizabeth Phelps

Martha Lizabeth Phelps is an Assistant Professor-in-Residence of Political Science at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she serves as the Faculty Advisor to the Political Science Club and honors society, Pi Sigma Alpha. She is active on campus, attending activities such as UNLV Creates, Welcome Day, Student Involvement Fairs, First Generation Gatherings, sporting events, and other RSO and campus activities. Dr. Phelps’ excellence in student engagement and retention earned her the student-selected CSUN Faculty Achievement Award (2021.) Dr. Phelps welcomes students to UNLV through her extensive lower-division course offerings. She teaches one of the largest course sections on campus, Introduction to American Politics, a writing-intensive Introduction to International Relations, and a freshman seminar designed to introduce majors to the department and their peers. Her upper-division courses include Research Methods, The State (state and local government, and federalism in the USA), and National Security Policy. Her research in modern security studies, with a regional focus on the Balkans, helps her bring current events into the classroom. She earned her Ph.D. with academic honors from the University of Miami, her M.A. from Norwich University, her B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and her A.A. from Mt. San Antonio College. After graduating, she served as an assistant professor in West Virginia. There, the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee elected her as the Faculty-Mentor of the Year (2015). Dr. Phelps credits her father (Helmuth Beutel), her history community college instructor (Hal Hoffman), and her Ph.D. advisor (Roger Kanet) as inspirations for her success and hopes to provide the same spark for students at UNLV.
