Next Generation Research Fellow In Canine Welfare, Research Assistant Professor - Stanton Foundation
Office Of The Chief Medical Examiner Of Massachusetts & Tufts University School Of Vet Med Jun 2015 - Jun 2016
During this remarkable year of training, disseminating and research, I investigated the following: Whether possible victim dogs are denied veterinary forensic exams and, if so, why; does offering free forensic exams identify more cases of dog abuse; and does a more thorough forensic exam better describe what a harmed dog may have suffered and increase prosecutorial success. My hypothesis was that a lack of knowledge and services at the ground level prevents cases from being identified or elevated to the criminal justice system. If these assessments are correct, the system would benefit from a paradigm shift in which expert veterinary evaluation is made available for cases of suspected abuse or unexplained harm/death. No other research has attempted to quantify uninvestigated abuse of dogs, or barriers to investigation and prosecution, in Massachusetts or elsewhere. This project should make an important contribution to the base literature in the evolving field of veterinary forensics.During this fellowship period, in addition to the research, I trained and collaborated at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, Tufts, and the forensics programs at Boston University School of Medicine to increase my knowledge of anatomic pathology and forensic techniques in order to better identify signs of animal cruelty and non-accidental injury when reviewing veterinary reports and other evidence uncovered as part of legal research and clinical investigations. This research fellowship ended June 30, 2016. Publications forthcoming.

  • Animal Rescue League Of Boston
    Vice President Of Animal Welfare
Animal Rescue League Of Boston Dec 2012 - May 2015
    Dedham, Massachusetts, Us
As vice president of animal welfare, I provided leadership for the animal welfare programs at the Animal Rescue League of Boston. At the time, the ARLB operated three animal shelters with an integrated shelter medicine program, a mobile low cost/high volume/high quality spay/neuter unit, Boston Veterinary Care - an outpatient veterinary practice, a humane law enforcement department and a technical rescue department. With support from the Frank Stanton Foundation, we developed the Center for Shelter Dogs. I shepherded the transfer of this remarkable program to the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine's Center for Animals and Public Policy in 2014.With a special interest in the investigation and prosecution of animal cruelty, through the years I contributed to numerous successful prosecutions. I did this in conjunction with the Director of The ARL's esteemed humane law enforcement department, Lt. Alan Borgal and his staff. I made the difficult decision to leave the Animal Rescue League of Boston in order to relinquish the heavy administrative load implicit in running an organization. My preference is to focus on the areas where I believe my energy, time and talents can do the greatest good: advocating for improved animal welfare, advancing veterinary forensics and the social benefits of these efforts. While I have departed the Animal Rescue League of Boston, I will always champion the philosophy of its founder, Anna Harris Smith, that “Kindness Uplifts the World”!

While I was grateful for the trust the Board placed in me to lead the Animal Rescue League of Boston while we were "between presidents", I learned that my skills are best served helping others run programs and develop as animal welfare experts. It was a wonderful opportunity, it was also a privilege to be profiled by the Boston Business Journal during this time. http://goo.gl/wRfOHh
  • Animal Rescue League Of Boston
    Director Of Veterinary Medical Services
Animal Rescue League Of Boston Sep 2001 - Dec 2012
    Dedham, Massachusetts, Us
From 2006 to 2012, I led the veterinary programs at the Animal Rescue League of Boston. Under my guidance and coaching, the capacity of the the Spay Waggin' increased from 14 surgeries a day to 40, through increased efficiencies and without any increases in surgical complications. I also helped to transform Boston Veterinary Care from a clinic which provided low cost care but without a plan for financial sustainability into one that delivers excellent veterinary care to client owned animals as a "Clinic With A Purpose". This outpatient full service veterinary clinic provides revenue to support the Shelter Medicine program, which I established as a formal program. I expanded the Shelter Medicine program from one full-time veterinarian, and a rotation of private practice veterinarians to three full-time shelter medicine focused veterinarians. This expanded program, along with the Spay Waggin, feral clinics and rabies clinics was renamed "Shelter and Community Veterinary Medicine" to better reflect the community role that shelter medicine plays.During this period, I also developed a strong interest in Veterinary Forensics and helped the Law Enforcement Department enjoy increased success with prosecutions for animal cruelty. From 2001 - 2006, I was a full-time Shelter Veterinarian at the ARL/B's former Pembroke Animal Shelter.

It was an absolute kick to work with Vicki Croke on her live-to-tape animal program as the show's "Official Veterinarian". It was a great experience that helped me to become more comfortable in front of cameras. This was also wonderful opportunity to contribute to the conversation around species and habitat conservation as well as animal sentience and animal welfare. http://bit.ly/m77rJf
  • Mspca
    Angell Intern & Shelter Veterinarian
    Mspca Jul 1997 - Sep 2001
    Boston, Ma, Us
I thrived during this grueling internship in medicine and surgery at Angell 1997 - 1998. At that time, the intern was the only veterinarian in the building overnight, providing care to emergencies and critical patients that were arriving in distress during the night. I learned to keep my cool, do swift research and trust my intuition in order to provide the best possible care under the circumstances. Fortunately, I was supported by some of the most seasoned and excellent veterinary technicians on the planet. Furthermore, I was on the receiving end of very complicated cases, cases that referring veterinarians weren't able to solve or care for in the local private hospital setting. I learned from the best internal medicine, surgery, exotics, cardiology, neurology and oncology veterinarians in the world. They taught me how to systematically and carefully perform a physical exam, interpret radiographs, laboratory tests and other diagnostics in order to make accurate diagnoses and develop appropriate therapeutic choices. This practical, hands-on education made me a far better veterinarian than I would have been without this internship. I held subsequent positions as staff veterinarian at Angell and Boston Shelter Veterinarian.
