About Martha Stark, Md
“The world breaks everyone; but, in the end, people are stronger at the broken places.” Ernest HemingwayI have long been fascinated by the concept of “optimal stress” – the therapeutic use of stress to “provoke recovery.” By way of therapeutic interventions that alternately challenge and then support, the therapist can precipitate disruption in order to trigger repair – the client now stronger not in spite of but by way of having mastered the impact of the therapist’s “optimally stressful” interventions.Underlying this “no pain / no gain” approach is my firm belief in both the underlying resilience that we all have and our innate ability to tap into our internal reserves in the face of optimal challenge. My longstanding clinical interest has also been in something to which I refer as “relentless hope” – the hope a defense, ultimately, against grieving. The client’s refusal to deal with the pain of her grief about the “object of her desire” fuels the relentlessness with which she pursues it, both the relentlessness of her hope that she might yet be able to make the object over into what she would want it to be and the relentlessness of the outrage she experiences in those moments of dawning recognition that she, despite her best efforts, might never be able to make that actually happen. In order to transform the need to hold on into the capacity to let go, the client must ultimately be able to confront – and grieve – the pain of her disappointment in the object (pain against which she has spent a lifetime defending herself), in the process finally relenting, forgiving, and evolving to a place of sober, mature acceptance. Sadder, perhaps, but also wiser. At the end of the day, I believe that psychotherapy is ultimately a story about the belated processing of unmastered experience and the grieving of early-on heartbreak.
