I lead software development organizations. I work with all sizes of companies from start-ups to global Fortune 500 technical executive roles. I'm turned-on by the exploding number of applications for Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning. I have managed multiple product lines as well as owning global cross-functional organizations with QA, Tech Pubs, Program Management, and Community Building. To keep my technical edge in our rapidly changing field, I often take on coding/tech lead/architect roles and then rotate back into management with my eyes fresh on the challenges of being an excellent manager. What makes my heart beat is building furiously happy teams, or at least largely sane ones. The vibe of your organization matters. When I find people smarter than me, I hire them. I like to know my people, understand them, ‘see’ them and what motivates them. I value diversity and orthogonal thinkers. I cultivate an environment of trust and respect. We have each other’s backs. I like to work. I lead by example: work ethic, competency, collaboration, ability to make the difficult decisions, team above individual and the ability to release those who are not a fit. As my favorite Boulder coffee shop tip jar says, "I am not resistant to change." And yah, I enjoy breaking the rules if it is the right thing for my organizations. I always feel a little bit of joy when the inmates take over the asylum. In my experience, all the above helps leads to team success. And success is the one thing that makes everyone happy.
