About Marti A. Moore

Freelance writer with the initiative and drive to generate my own community news leads. Published in The Montgomery Journal, Connection Newspapers, and The Prince William Times. My journalism skills are transferable to business. The journalism process for researching facts, producing story leads, and interviewing sources for news reports is the same method I use for conducting market research, generating business leads, and calling decision-makers to sell a product or service. Product knowledge about the subject I write or sell plus excellent customer service skills developed through years of work in print advertisement, retail and restaurant sales are critical to my mission success.Interested in working as a copy editor for special projects — such as proofreading and cleaning up mistakes in websites, annual reports, sales kits, and business emails. Wrote business briefs for The Montgomery Journal. Can write staff and executive bios for the "About Us" page on a company website.

Best part is meeting ordinary people unaware of the extraordinary things they do as they try to improve the quality of life of others in their own neighborhoods — or across the world. A great example is a World War II veteran who speaks to school children. He may be in his 90s but this kid from Philadelphia is young at heart and loves to make people smile! "I never forget what I remember," he quips in a style like baseball legend Yogi Berra — who my sailor claimed he met several decades ago at a dinner party.Read about Sigmond the Sailor Man in "Freedom isn't free for 92-year-old veteran" on Page 4 athttp://connectionarchives.com/PDF/2017/112217/Chantilly.pdfAnd "Restaurant marks 100 years since Armistice" on Page 8 at http://www.connectionnewspapers.com/news/2018/nov/17/chantilly-restaurant-marks-100-years-armistice/My favorite cover story was about a Northern Virginia resident who loved Christmas so much he had a beyond brilliant holiday light display. It was so dazzling, motorists traveling down a nearby parkway could see the beacon through the neighborhood's tree line. A policeman said during his evening patrols, he watched passing vehicles make U-turns to check out the source of Christmas delight. The homeowner posted a banner on his lawn asking passersby to donate money to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.See "Black Friday is Bright at Night in Reston" on pages 8 and 9 of The Reston Connection athttp://connectionarchives.com/PDF/2017/121317/Reston.pdf Show less

In the United States, UMCOR operates supply depots, affiliate warehouses, and distribution points in Alabama, Illinois, Louisiana, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Regularly, churches nationwide provide UMCOR with humanitarian supplies ready to move to Ground Zero when disaster strikes. See how one congregation participates in “United Methodists Put Faith in Action: Busy hands in Fairfax try to alleviate human suffering on Outreach Sunday" on pages 12 and 15 of the Sept. 28, 2017, Fairfax Connection.http://connectionarchives.com/PDF/2017/092717/Fairfax.pdfAfter surviving Category 5 storm Hurricane Irma in early September 2017, Puerto Rico received a direct hit two weeks later from Category 4 Hurricane Maria. Of course, people can donate cash to the American Red Cross and other disaster relief organizations poised to help immediately in the disaster zone. However, Northern Virginians prefer to roll up their sleeves, give what they have, go buy relief supplies, and deliver them personally to collection sites, which I could not find online. Many area Catholic churches did not have one. One local church pointed me to the storm recovery effort of a private business in Chantilly, Va. “United for Puerto Rico: Area Residents Join Storm Recovery Cause” is a cover story on pages 3 and 4 of the Oct. 12, 2017, Burke Connection. It showed how a local video production company mobilized as the storm approached and helped distraught residents of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia send relief supplies to their families in Puerto Rico.http://connectionarchives.com/PDF/2017/101117/Burke.pdf Show less

Sold our services to clients in need of new corporate identity, from logos to annual reports.Worked for a graphic designer who specialized in Swiss style, an aesthetic created and developed by European artists in the first half of the 20th century. She was a huge fan of April Greiman — one of the first American designers to use a computer as a commercial art tool. A drafting table topped with art pens and X-acto knives collected dust in a back room of her Downtown Charleston office while Sally Heineman created slick business cards, letterheads, direct mail pieces, brochures, rack cards, special event posters, and print advertisements using QuarkXPress software for the Macintosh computer. Her portfolio alone was a work of modern art when she launched Heineman Design in 1992. I marketed it to as many local, regional, and national businesses as possible. We added value to projects by providing clients with high-quality work at a lower cost than Madison Avenue advertising agencies. We also volunteered for the public relations committee of the Preservation Society of Charleston.Heineman was a master of creating design elements called silhouettes — a technique that requires an artist or photographer to use a mouse with the steady precision of a surgeon to cut an image from its background. It helped break up content in a local mail-order catalog updated by Heineman Design. The use of clip art was against my boss's religion. She worked with local photographers and artists to create original pictures for projects, such as a brochure for a rehabilitation center once housed at the historic Fenwick Hall Plantation. I drew simple illustrations for one or two emergency projects requiring a fast turnaround.Well-versed in print industry jargon. Identified the full scope of each project and bid them out to area commercial print companies. Show less

Maintained national clients — such as AT&T and Apple Computers Inc. my predecessor scored for our publication and left in my capable hands. Updated business policies to accommodate a fast-growing enterprise, which only earned $10,000 in annual sales two years earlier. Supervised the ad layout for each edition. This student-run newspaper received a national first-place achievement from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. As an advertising and sales representative, I conducted my own market research, generated sales leads, and contacted marketing agents at local, regional and national companies. I helped my first client save money by advertising in six consecutive issues. Helped other local businesses coordinate their long-term ad campaigns. Designed advertisements for clients. Launched the newspaper’s subscriptions department. The surge in ad revenue purchased new computers for the newsroom, increased pay stipends for hard-working reporters and provided job training opportunities for staffers at college journalism conferences nationwide.
