About Martijn Arns

Martijn Arns is biological-psychologist and entrepreneur with a strong background in applied neuroscience and medtech. Graduating from Radboud University in Nijmegen in the late 90s, Martijn embarked on a journey of research and discovery in institutions around the world such as Westmead Hospital (Sydney), Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry (Munich), Organon Research (Glasgow) and Utrecht University. Currently, Martijn serves as associate professor at the University of Maastricht (Brain Stimulation and Cognition) and is visiting scholar at Stanford University (Stanford Brain Stimulation Lab)In 2001, Martijn founded Research Institute Brainclinics, which has since become a vital part of the non-profit Brainclinics Foundation. The Brainclinics Foundation’s primary mission is best summarized as: Applied Neuroscience from the clinic, to the clinic and focuses on interventional psychiatry and applied neuroscience where research outcomes should be easily translatable into clinical practice and clinically actionable. Martijn's expertise extends to the development and application of brain stimulation techniques, such as rTMS for depression and OCD, TMS induced Heart-Brain Coupling and EEG based precision psychiatry and stratified psychiatry.Martijn's leadership is evident in his role as a supervisor for various researchers and the publication of over 170 scientific papers and four patents. Throughout his career, he has successfully established several spin-off ventures from Brainclinics. These include Brainquiry (founded in 2002), which introduced the first Bluetooth-based EEG system and a smartwatch, neurocare group (established in 2015), an international innovative mental health clinic, neurocademy (launched in 2015), a training platform for certification in neuromodulation treatments (TMS and neurofeedback), and in 2023 spun-out the Brainmarker platform, an EEG based platform used for treatment stratification. In 2007 he was awarded the FD Gazellen award for fastest growing company.Martijn's contributions to the scientific community extend beyond his research and spin-offs. He has served as an (associate) editor for various scientific journals and books. Moreover, he has organized numerous international conferences and served on the boards of several (inter)national professional non-profit organizations. As scientific advisor, he has lent his expertise to several medtech and AI start-ups as well as established companies, contributing to advancements and implementation in the field.

Brainclinics was founded in 2001 as an independent research institute by Dr. Martijn Arns and specializes in advancing our understanding of the brain. The Brainclinics Foundation’s primary mission is best summarized as: Applied Neuroscience from the clinic, to the clinic. We focus on interventional psychiatry and applied neuroscience where research outcomes should be easily translatable into clinical practice and clinically actionable. Specialty areas we focus on are non-invasive brain stimulation techniques such as TMS, biomarker informed stratified psychiatry using brain activity biomarkes such as EEG and ECG and TMS induced Heart-Brain Coupling as a target engagement technique to target the right brain area, at the right intensity.
  • Brainclinics Foundation
    Founding Director: Spin-Off Braincinics Treatment
    Brainclinics Foundation Dec 2006 - Jan 2016
    Nijmegen, The Netherlands
Brainclinics Treatment (a Brainclinics spin-off) is a mental health clinic in Nijmegen (The Netherlands) working in close collaboration with Research Institute Brainclinics. In this clinic new innovative treatments (neuromodulation techniques)are developed and validated such as rTMS (Brain stimulation) in the treatment of depression (2006), OCD and Neurofeedback in the treatment of ADHD. In 2015 this clinic was acquired by the neurocare group AG and the treatment approaches rolled out internationally (USA, Australia, Germany, Italy).
  • Brainclinics Foundation
    Founding Director: Spin-Off Brainclinics Education
    Brainclinics Foundation Mar 2004 - Jan 2016
    Nijmegen, Gelderland, Netherlands
Brainclinics Education was one of the first training centers where certification courses and masterclasses on advanced neuromodulation and brain stimulation treatments (neurofeedback, rTMS) were offered. More than 1000 researchers and clinicians from more than 30 countries have been trained here. In 2016 Brainclinics Education was acquired by neurocaregroup AG and continued as neurocademy.
  • Brainclinics Foundation
