About Martin Ekelund
Ever since my first Lego Technic kit as a kid I knew that my path in life would be that of a mechanical engineer. I have always had a keen interest in creating things that move and do things. It started with building Lego as a child, and as I got older I started creating things such as radio controlled boats from metal and composites. In recent years I have been spending most of my spare time in the workshop at Chalmers creating parts with the lathes, mills, and CNC-mills. This gives me an edge over most newly graduated engineering as I have significant practical experience, along with great engineering intuition. My primary hobby has been two stroke motorcycles since I bought my first moped at 14. Currently my vehicle of choice is old Vespa’s, for which I’ve designed and built multiple different parts, such as clutches, resonance exhaust systems, silencers, cylinder heads, etc. What I find most satisfying with building parts for my Vespa is that I can see and feel the results first hand, what works, and what I can do better next time. The achievement I am most proud of is my performance in Chalmers Formula Student team of 2017, where I was responsible for the unsprung mass. I designed, manufactured, and tested a total of 14 carbon fiber rims saving a total of 5kg of mass. The team finished first in our class at Formula Student Netherlands, as well as 8th overall at Formula Student Germany.I see myself trying multiple different work areas within mechanical engineering and possibly control systems engineering within the coming years. Further in the future I see myself as a manager of a small- to mid-size group of people, where I settle for an extended period of time.Specialities:Software: Catia V5, Team Center, ANSYS, ANSYS ACP, Inventor, GT-POWER, Matlab, MasterCamPractical: Turning, Milling, CNC-milling, TiG/MiG Welding
Listed skills include Catia, Ansys, Mechanical Engineering, Matlab, and 16 others.

I work with multiple engine installations in multiple platforms, where I package & develop the system alongside suppliers to assure the best possible packaging and system performance. In addition, I am supporting with the development of the TeamCenter environment, the complementing of the digital portfolio with missing softwares , and the development of CAD related support material. As the company is rather recently founded and I have extensive previous experience with both teamcenter & CATIA based CAD work, I am putting my skillset to the best possible use.
Senior Mechanical Engineer
CurrentI am currently working for Mattr Collective AB as a consultant, both supporting in-house projects as a techincal advisor and working as a consultant for external customers.Internally I am assisting with the design & assuring manufacturability and assemblability of both battery modules & complete battery assemblies. I am mentoring several younger colleagues, helping them learn the ropes and how to have a productive and solution oriented mindset.Externally I am working for RGNT Motorcycles where I am CTO & Project Leader, and as a Design Engineer and system developer at Aurobay.
Design Engineer & Component Owner
I worked for Scania with the cooling system, performing a very broad set of engineering tasks. These tasks included the updating of components, the creation of new components, handling of structures, parts & BOM lists, advanced engineering projects, supplier discussions, and the planning and coordination of testing & verification .My primary responsibility within the cooling system was the Auxiliary Cab Cooling & Auxiliary Cab Heating system installations, which included AC piping, AC, hoses, blocks, valves, and bracketry amongst others. The work includes layout studies, part design, creation of drawings, as well as planning & coordinating the testing of the two AC systems. I also coordinated the work & cooperation amongst the Cooling System, Electrical, and Cab teams. A total of 10 test trucks are being built with various AC & cooling system configurations present.Furthermore, Martin is responsible for all Advanced Engineering projects for the cooling system. These include the study of deflection as a result of air pressure on parts, hose deflection as a result of movement between the cab and the chassis, various packaging studies, and the structural effects of replacing expensive metal members with cheaper injection moulded equivalent components.Work at scania was primarily performed Catia v5, Enovia, and IPS, along with all of Scanias internal systems for handling parts, testing, and deviation reporting.
Consultant
I was working for Knightec Technology West consulting within mechanical engineering.
Design Engineer
I was at PMC Hydraulics AB performing various CAD tasks & mechanical design pertaining to hydraulics systems.
Concept Design Engineer
The work I performed at CEVT included a variety of different work tasks, varying from development of new wheel axles for new platforms and managing their CAD & BOM structures, to performing standalone Advance Engineering projects & method development. My primary tools at CEVT were CATIAv5 & TeamCenter.CATIA work included using solid, surface, and assembly design to create parts and assemblies, a multitude of linear structural simulation workbenches (GPS, GAS, EST, FMS, FMD), and using DMU Kinematics to perform assorted packaging related tasks including making envelopes, checking clerances, etc.TeamCenter was used for version handling Advanced Engineering projects and platform projects in concept phases. It was additionally used to manage parts, CAD structures, and BOM structures when supporting projects in production phase.I participated in the development of two separate platforms where I was responsible for the rear axles. Responsibilities included initial concept layout, initial design of parts, and initial CAE analysis and packaging of parts. I was furthermore responsible for coordinating work between the Chassis department, CAE department, and Vehicle Dynamics department regarding the rear axles. Along with the CAE department Martin developed a method for setting up a simulation of a complete rear axle in CATIA, with the goal of distributing the loads throughout the system, propagated from the wheel centre up to the body. The goal of this method development was to significantly decrease lead times on acquiring the forces in the individual system parts from a few months to a few days. This greatly reduced the timespan in which mature parts could be developed in early concept phases of project and Advanced Engineering projects. Results achieved in CATIA was within approximately 2% of the results produced by the CAE department on an identical assembly.
Consultant
I spent the first four years of my professional career working as a Consultant for ALTEN Sweden, within the Mechanical and Automotive sectors. As my first assignment started around a month before my initially decided date of employment and ended the day before I left ALTEN, my experience at the ALTEN office is limited.
Master Thesis Student
My master's thesis was conducted for the Handheld group at Husqvarna Group along with another student, covering the topic of "Direct Injection on Small Two-stroke Engines".The scope of the master's thesis was to research what could be achieved in terms of emissions and performance of handheld forestry and garden equipment by implementing a Direct Injection system. The work was carried out in two parts; a theoretical literature study, and a practical demonstration with a prototype. The prototype was built from scratch, based on an engine supplied from Husqvarna, and a High Pressure pump supplied by Chalmers. All parts, mechanical, electrical, and software, required to adapt the engine to operate on Direct Injection, were designed and built by us. This included a complete ECU along with software to operate the engine at various speeds and loads, a water cooled cylinder head housing injector, spark plug, and cylinder pressure sensor, etc.
Manager
The first half of my fifth year at Chalmers was spent as a manager for the following years Chalmers Formula Student team, being responsible for the Suspension sub-group, along with being in charge of all CAD and CAE related education of the team.Being a manager for the Suspension sub-group, I was tasked with the suspension specific education of the group, along with teaching them what worked and what didn't work for us in the previous year. The biggest challenge turned out to be figuring out how to manage people in order to get the best out of them, and how to motivating them how to work. My initial approach was to manage them as I would like to be managed, but as the project progressed I learned that this was not necessarily the most efficient way of managing other people depending on personalities and cultural differences.I educated the team in how to use both Catia V5, and ANSYS. The primary lectures covered how to design and simulate solids efficiently and correctly. More advanced lectures were held for the subgroups that was to work with composites, covering how to design parts with the surface workbenches, along with how to simulate a non-isotropic composite part in ANSYS ACP.
Project Engineer
I spent my fourth year in the Chalmers Formula Student team of 2017 in the role of a Project Engineer.I was initially responsible for the Unsprung Mass system, including hubs, uprights, and rims during the design-phase of the project. The work covered all stages from concept to design, simulation, and verification of the parts in terms of performance and strength. Additionally as the project progressed I also ended up responsible for the cooling system, as work did not progress as desired within this system. My prime focus during the desing phase was the design of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic rims for the first time in the project since 2013, this time with a one piece CFRP construction. The result was in the end 14 CFRP rims weighing ~30% of what equivalent aluminium rims weighed. An updated version of these rims are still being used 2 years later. During the manufacturing phase I was the prime responsible for the manufacturing and assembly of the CFRP rims, along with head CNC operator and coordinator.
