About Martin B. Kalinowski

In my work as nuclear science freelancer, I build on what I did before for many years: developing technology road maps, plan budgets and projects, supervising staff and contractors enhancing, testing and implementing cutting edge scientific methods and computer algorithms for operational data processing. I am employed by ISTI as senior expert specialized on effective strategies for applying nuclear forensic analysis methodologies on atmospheric radioactivity data to facilitate nuclear explosion monitoring under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Also, I promote the use of data from the CTBT International Monitoring System (IMS) for civil and scientific application. Training and education of students and young professionals is crucial for developing capacities and empowering the future generations. The tenure-track faculty position “technology and international peace and security policy" was jointly awarded by the Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering (NPRE) and the Program in Arms Control & Domestic and International Security (ACDIS). My research focus was on circulation and detection of radioactive noble gases in the atmosphere as indicators of clandestine nuclear activities. I taught classes on nuclear weapons, nuclear war and arms control; neutron diffusion and transport; and a writing seminar on global security.Keeping status as Faculty Affiliate, see https://acdis.illinois.edu/directory/faculty-affiliates

Monte Carlo simulation with MCNP of the Neutron Coincidence Collar response to burnable neutron poisons in PWR fuel assemblies with the goal to determine the detectability of lithium breeding targets for the production of tritium. This question is important in the context of nuclear safeguards for the detection of nuclear-weapons usable material production.
