I undertook a six-month research placement assessing the performance of metal-organic frameworks (a novel class of inorganic porous materials) for use in carbon capture technologies. This entailed material synthesis and their characterisation through techniques such powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and BET surface area estimation.Fixed-bed adsorption experiments were performed to assess the kinetic performance of the materials in post-combustion flue gas streams. Through my work I developed extensive working protocols for the apparatus along with an explanation of the theory for my colleagues with chemistry backgrounds. I also expanded the range of data acquisition by designing a new component to allow temperature measurements.

I constructed a volumetric apparatus for the measurement of gas adsorption isotherms, to be used in the undergraduate teaching laboratories. This involved writing the operating instructions and the necessary theory of adsorption phenomena in a clear and concise manner for the students understanding. I gave weekly progress updates to members of the Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage (SCCS) organisation.
