I am passionate about clinical and translational science in the field of kidney and cardiovascular disease. Over the past 20 years, my goal has been to better understand how kidney disease develops and progresses, and why kidney patients have such a strongly increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Following my clinical training, I got the opportunity to establish my own research group that focuses on three main topics: 1) how can we improve the detection of chronic kidney disease (CKD), 2) better understanding of metabolic abnormalities related to bone and mineral health in CKD and after kidney transplantation, and 3) developing improved therapeutic strategies to reduce cardiovascular risk in CKD and post-transplant. Meanwhile, I have published close to 300 papers on these topics in leading journals like the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet Diabetes, and Nature Genetics that have been cited >10,000 times. I have trained 25 PhD students and received >4 million euros in scientific grants over the last five years. My team uses innovative methodology to address clinically relevant research questions pertaining the topics mentioned above.

Board Member, Psi-Bind-Nl (Parel Nierfalen)Parelsnoer Institute May 2016 - PresentThe String of Pearls initiative (Parelsnoer) was started by the Dutch government to create a biobank infrastructure for chronic disease including kidney disease. Patients with CKD Stages 1-4 are eligible for enrollment in the Biobank of Nephrological Diseases-NL (BIND-NL) cohort. The data architecture is designed to reflect routine care, with specific issues added for enrichment, e.g. questionnaires. Thus, the collected clinical and biochemical data are those required by prevailing guidelines for routine nephrology care, with a minimal dataset for all patients, and diagnosis-specific data for the diagnostic categories of primary and secondary glomerular disorders and adult dominant polycystic kidney disease, respectively. The dataset is supplemented by a biobank, containing serum, plasma, urine and DNA. The cohort will be longitudinally monitored, with yearly follow-up for clinical outcome. Future linking of the data to those from the national registries for renal replacement therapy is foreseen to follow the patients' lifeline throughout the different phases of renal disease and different treatment modalities. In the design of the data architecture, care was taken to ensure future exchangeability of data with other CKD cohorts by applying the data harmonization format of the Renal DataSHaPER, with a dataset based upon standardized indicator sets to facilitate collaboration with other CKD cohorts. Enrolment started in 2010, and over 2200 eligible patients have been enrolled in the different UMCs. Follow-up of enrolled patients has started, and enrolment will continue at a slower rate. The aggregation and standardization of clinical data and biosamples from large numbers of CKD patients will be a strategic resource not only for clinical and translational research, but also by its basis in routine clinical care for clinical governance and quality improvement projects. -

PostdocIstituto Mario Negri Oct 2006 - Oct 2007In the lab of Dr Ariela Benigni and Dr Marina Noris, I worked on the genetic basis of proteinuria, in a European Union (FP6)-funded project called EuReGene (euregene.org). I conducted experiments in an animal model of spontaneous proteinuria, where I aimed to identify novel kidney genes differentially regulated in these animals as compared with control animals.
