About Martin Denham
I'm originally from the North East and graduated from Cumbria Institute of the Arts in 1997 with a degree in Media Production. My career began as an AD on commercials, short films and corporate videos before cutting my directorial teeth on broadcast promos. Over the years I've produced a lot of commercial content for a wide variety of high street brands and worked with many television personalities, music acts and Hollywood stars.I was 1st AD & 2nd Unit Director on the feature film ‘Dark Signal’ for Executive Producer Neil Marshall and have made several narrative short films including a film noir adaptation of 'OTHELLO', which won 'Best Film Inspired by Shakespeare' at the Shakespeare Film Festival in 2018. Festival patron Sir Kenneth Branagh said of the film: "Great assurances in the performances... There is a real confidence to the direction... Visually impressive, and even lush, it has a great maturity cinematically...". I also won best music video at AAA New Music Awards in 2007 for ‘Kill Romeo’ by Smith 6079, shot by BAFTA nominated cinematographer Sam Care.I'm represented by 1 Artists’ Agency, a member of DirectorsUK and former secretary of the Writers/Producers/Directors branch at BECTU. I've run a screen acting workshop at The Actors Centre and taught filmmaking & script analysis for the International School of Screen Acting at 3Mills Studios. I'm a trained script reader & script editor and work as a private script consultant. I'm currently developing my new film company GO BIG Pictures.

International School of Screen Acting is based at 3 Mills Studios. I teach a variety of modules:Technical Fluency, Framing & Direction: A short intense module to train students about the filmmaking side of their craft. The module does a deep dive into on-set language, framing and coverage.Guerrilla Filmmaking: An intensive module where screen acting students have to write, produce, shoot & star in a genre short film. I'm on hand every step of the way to help them through the process by providing expert guidance on all aspects of their production. Script Analysis: An 8 week module to help screen acting students understand genre, character, story construction & structure so they can breakdown and analyse film & TV scripts. This is a mixture of seminar learning & practical exercises.Audio Workshop: A short intense module to train students about the world of commercial V/O and character voices for animation.COVID Update: During May-August 2020 I helped manage the online curriculum by restructuring classes to better suit delivery by Zoom and creating brand new schedules for classes that had never run at the school before. This utilised all of my past experience organising & scheduling shoots.

Since going freelance in 2014, I've expanded my experience & skillset in various areas of film and branded content production including: creating solutions to a client brief & working directly with those clients, hiring freelance crew, managing a team & scheduling productions, 1st AD and directing 2nd Unit on a low budget feature film, D.I.T., scriptwriting & development, raising finance for short film production, studying business development & writing a business plan, gaining an accountancy qualification and discovering I have a great radio voice which was a real surprise. This all follows extensive broadcast experience as a producer/director on promos, web content, interviews and editorial, a digital content photographer for websites, live studio floor manager, and assistant director on commercials, corporate films and music videos. I've traveled extensively all over the UK with my work and as far afield as New York, Italy and South Africa, and worked on projects with various high profile celebrities, film stars, music acts, footballers, wild animals and children.I'm happy working with large or small crews, in the studio or location, and have shot with various HD cameras from 5D to Sony F5 and RED to Arri Alexa with anamorphic lenses.I'm passionate about telling stories that matter & creating content that has purpose. I believe in creating an experience, a feeling, so an audience connects emotionally with the material.
