Experienced, highly motivated and versatile Research Chemist with over 20 years of working in the pharmaceuticals industry, primarily in process research and development (PR&D) in organic chemistry. I am interested in finding and implementing solutions for complex and challenging technical problems in synthetic and process chemistry. While working in pharmaceuticals, I had a strong focus on the application of asymmetric chemocatalysis and biocatalysis to APIs and synthons, including designing and testing novel ligands for catalysis, and also in evaluation, discovery and development of viable synthetic routes to complex APIs, characterisation issues of complex APIs and experience of technical leadership of multi-disciplinary teams of scientists in projects in these areas. Now, I have moved to biotechnology, where I expanded my interest in complex molecules and challenging chemistry problems and led the effort to design and produce the building blocks in Nuclera's enzyme-based DNA synthesis programme. Subsequently, I led the development of chemistry-based applications, for Nuclera's eProtein bioprinter, especially those important in the drug-discovery field, such as the screening of DNA-encoded libraries of small molecules. Implementation of this technology requires precise orchestration of biochemistry and microfluidics. I am working on a project with a partner company to apply machine learning to analysis of the complex datasets generated from screening of these libraries in identifying leads for drug discovery. I am also working on Nuclera's Generation 2 eProtein Discovery product, which aims to use the microfluidic device for screening conditions for production of mammalian proteins by culture of mammalian cells on the microfluidic device.

Principal ChemistNuclera Aug 2022 - PresentCambridge, Cambridgeshire, GbI led the development of chemistry based applications such as screening of DNA-encoded libraries of small molecules for Nuclera's eProtein bioprinter as an individual contributor and also helped lay the groundwork for Nuclera's Generation 2 eProtein Discovery product, which aims to use produce mammalian proteins by culture of mammalian cells on Nuclera's microfluidic device. I have augmented the skills and knowledge in building complex molecules and developing advanced chemical processes from my experience the pharmaceutical industry and the earlier stage of my time with Nuclera with molecular biology skills in DNA assembly, PCR, DNA analysis and DNA sequencing, and skills in protein science and microfluidics, and in working with scientists and engineers from many different disciplines. I also collaborated with an external partner in connecting this work with the application of artificial intelligence in drug discovery and with partners in the NATA (Nucleic Acid Therapy Accelerator) Manufacturing Challenge consortium in re-orientating the enzymatic DNA synthesis programme towards creating an improved technology for manufacture of therapeutic oligonucleotides. -
Synthetic Chemistry Group LeaderNuclera Apr 2021 - Aug 2022Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, GbI led the chemistry team, first to design and make the chemical building blocks for the eDNA bioprinter, and then in developing chemistry based applications for Nuclera's eProtein bioprinter until the time when a full team was no longer required. This used the skills and knowledge I have acquired in building complex molecules and developing advanced chemical processes in the pharmaceutical industry, but has required new skills in purifying, analysing and testing challenging molecules, working with scientists and engineers from many different disciplines and in managing a team of scientists. -
Senior Synthetic ChemistNuclera Jan 2019 - Apr 2021Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, GbI joined the effort make the chemical building blocks for Nuclera's enzyme based DNA synthesis technology in 2019. After over 20 years developing processes for pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical intermediates and applying of chemo- and biocatalysis in this field, I started putting the skills and knowledge I have acquired in building complex molecules to new use in biotechnology. -
Principal Research ScientistDr. Reddy'S Laboratories 2008 - Oct 2018Hyderabad, Ts, InMy work at Dr Reddy's encompassed evaluation, discovery and development of viable synthetic routes to complex APIs, technology advantaged APIs and synthons. My focus was on in solving complex and challenging technical problems and identifying and implementing appropriate technologies. I started at Dr Reddy's with a strong focus on the application of asymmetric chemocatalysis and biocatalysis, but have developed interests and expertise in many other aspects of synthesis and characterisation of complex APIs as my awareness of the type of projects of interest to the business unfolded. I have 17 papers, patent applications and other publications arising from my work. -
