Following two years qualifying as a legal practitioner in Edinburgh with commercial law firm Dundas & Wilson (now CMS Law - https://cms.law/), I joined Edinburgh Law School in 1995, where I was successively a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and then Professor of the Law of Obligations. I was Vice Dean from 2014-2017 and Dean from 2017 to 2021. In November 2021, I took up the posts of Dean and Established Professor at the University of Galway School of Law, Ireland - a QS World University Rankings Top 150 Law School and Irish Law School of the Year 2024. ◼ I served (2021-2023) as one of the two Co-Presidents of the Law Schools Global League (https://lawschoolsgloballeague.com/).◼ I am a non-practising member of the Faculty of Advocates, the Scottish Bar (https://www.advocates.org.uk/). ◼ I am a member of the European Centre of Tort and Insurance Law (https://www.ectil.org/).◼ I am a member of the International Bar Association (https://www.ibanet.org/) and I serve as the African Regional Forum Liaison Officer of its Academic & Professional Development Committee.◼ I am a member of the American Bar Association (https://www.americanbar.org/).My main areas of research lie in all aspects of the law of obligations, with a recent focus on comparative obligations law, the law of contract and promise, the fundamental structural language of the law of obligations, and restatements and codifications of the law.
