After he flipped the power switch, the screen on the coin op arcade game flickered and filled with random symbols dumped like garbage. My 10 year old self stood still in wonder and amazement trying to make sense of the spectacle. What was happening behind that screen? While trivial in origin, this question led me to seek understanding, read books, take classes, and practice understanding and solving problems using code. Understanding how things work has been a lifelong undertaking.As a high school student, I landed my first “office job” in a management consulting group. On my first day, I was welcomed by my manager’s manager. Not far into the exchange, I asked, why did you choose me? He explained that I was the only candidate who knew what his parents did and also understood why their jobs mattered. Cool.I approach life as a series of opportunities to both do something now and learn how to do it better in the future. An abundance mentality helps me stay positive when those opportunities come with challenges.Ironically, the Zen of Python tells us “there should be one obvious way”, yet I find its versatility lets me express a variety of solutions as they naturally fit. Modern SQL, complete with lateral joins, common table expressions, analytic functions and the ability to write aggregate functions, has raised my expectations of what you can do and, at times, a joy to use. Along with my willingness to see multiple perspectives, good tools like these let me be expressive without getting in my way.As a software engineer and entrepreneur, I share my understanding and ideas by providing analysis, recommendations and technology to successful people. I’ve helped my organizations by proposing how their goals can better align with each other and their vision, identify and implement critical workflows, design databases, build web applications, create a culture of data-driven decision making, and expand into new markets.While I was born and raised in NY, I’ve had professional capacities in London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Taipei, enjoying the sights, sounds, hospitality and food.
