About Martin Müller

PhD in materials science and engineering. The PhD project, in collaboration with steel manufacturer Dillinger, dealt with the quantification and classification of bainitic microstructures using machine learning methods.In the meantime, at MECS, I’m working as a de-facto “materials data scientist” on several industrial research projects on the topics of microstructure characterization, correlative microscopy and microstructure segmentation and classification using machine learning methods.In my secondary role at the Chair of Functional Materials at Saarland University, my tasks include supervising student projects, writing research proposals and working on research collaborations (e.g., GFaI Berlin, Fraunhofer IWM Freiburg, Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, University of Michigan in Ann Arbor).Further activities include:- ASM Subcommittee AI/ML- DGM working group "quantitative microstructure Analysis"- DIN standardization committee "metallographic testing methods"- Involvement in the DGM training courses "Introduction to modern methods of microstructural analysis" and "Deep Learning: Fundamentals and applications to examples from Material Science"- DGM/AWT joint committee "Werkstofftechnik Stahl"

The work in industry was more applied materials engineering in a manufacturing company. But now I wanted to take the opportunity to work on a project more scientifically and over several years as part of a doctorate.The PhD project, in a strategic partnership with local steel manufacturer Dillinger, dealt with the quantification and classification of bainitic microstructures using machine learning methods. After submitting my PhD thesis (although it is not yet defended) I transitioned into a full-time employee role at MECS and are now supervising most of our industrial as well as scientific machine learning projects. The company is a forging and ring-rolling company, where I was able to work with a wide range of steel grades in addition to some non-ferrous metals (Aluminium-, Copper-, Nickel-alloys) and get to know almost all areas of the production chain, from primary material to hot forming and heat treatment to welding technology and quality control, and was also able to experience and help shape production "live" on site. During this time, I was able to develop both professionally and personally and demonstrate my systematic and structured way of working.
