As the Group Chief Actuary, I am resposible for everything actuarial at the group level. This entails mainly IFRS 17, Solvency II and SST and the ensuing discussions with the management in this area. My team is organized in a BizDevOps manner, embracing the development of our tools, their operations as well as the actuarial and accounting business. With Baloise as a composite insurer, I care both about life and P&C insurance. I am fascinated by the width of the spectrum of the tasks my department works on and enjoy leading the actuarial capacities of Baloise to the next level.

As program manager group actuarial I am responsible for Baloise Group's insurance technical IFRS closing (for the largest part IFRS 17, but also IFRS 9 and IAS 19), as well as the group's reporting of SST (Swiss Solvency Test) and support the entities in their local Solvency II processes.

I am heading the IFRS 17 workstream of Baloise's Financial Transformation initiative. There I am responsible to develop the IFRS 17 methodology for both life and non-life portfolios, including reinsurance, negociate it with the auditor, direct the implementation of said methodology in a group wide calculation engine by a third party (Systemorph), and post the IFRS 17 results to the general ledger. A part of the job is to supervise group-wide IFRS 17 exercises, dry and parallel runs, the results of which are communicated to the top management and the board by me. Further work includes sensitivities and projections, and help in the general closing process developement.

Head of a small team of life actuaries, focusing onIFRS Local GAAPMCEVSolvency II and SSTALMWe develop our models within Prophet (using the international, ALS or our own custom-built libraries) or C++ for flexibility and speed. The models are used by us in the closing of the above mentioned frameworks. All the frameworks use the same environment, keeping the calculations consistent and making maintenance efficient. Reporting to the management, forecasts, analysis of changes and alternative calculations are managed in our team as well. We developped and currently productively use for SST and ALM a fast nested stochastics model for the whole with-profit individual and group life portfolio. The model can be automatically calibrated within hours to a new portfolio, the runtime for 100'000 x 1'000 paths over the whole portfolio is only a couple of hours on a small machine. Once you are able to work with a nested machine, there is no way back. Many questions can be solved that have been untackable before, and a new insight into risk management emerges, leading to more advanced applications and ideas for solutions.
