Managing PartnerThea Advisory Ltd May 2023 - Jul 2024London, England, United KingdomPublic and private support and funding for philanthropic interventions has faced significant pressure over the past 5 years in tandem with an even greater requirement to respond to and serve those with the greatest need. In addition to the advent of Covid and nations turning inwards to both address the needs of their own peoples, there has been an economic downturn that has reduced bi-lateral funding pools at the same time as increased calls for those funds to be directed to even more worthwhile and unexpected issues. Additionally, there has been a subtle change in attitudes towards metrics, accountability, green washing, impact and systemic reform. Working with and through Governments - never a popular position to adopt - has in fact become an even more important position to embrace rather than trying to address issues alone and in splendid isolation. Greater accountability driven by both public and private philanthropic investment is no longer optional but a pre-requisite for all those operating within this sector.Thea Advisory Ltd works with both public and private sector entities and specialises in ‘C’ Suite strategy development, leadership coaching, operational execution, fundraising, innovative finance and market and competitors.

President World Cocoa FoundationWorld Cocoa Foundation Sep 2021 - Oct 2022The World Cocoa Foundation is a membership driven and funded 501(c)3 based out of Washington DC. Its mandate is to champion the solutions that drive the reduction of poverty, child labour and deforestation in the Cocoa supply chain. The challenges that are being faced and addressed in the Cocoa sector are mostly sovereign by nature. In other words, unless the Governments of those countries are both engaged and committed to working in partnerships with the private sector and other actors, then long-lasting solutions will be elusive. This requires a systems reform approach and one that embraces both Governments and MDB’s in large programmatic interventions that apply a top-down approach to the issues at hand. Collaboration is not only key to success but also a natural barrier within the private sector where corporate interests can trump collective action. The Foundation can act as that conduit to nurture and cultivate the necessary actions needed to bring all parties to the table to act against child labour, address poverty and reverse deforestation. -
Chief Executive OfficerThe Power Of Nutrition Jul 2015 - Sep 2020London, United KingdomThe Power of Nutrition was founded in 2015 to enable public and private financing to come together to fund high-impact programmes to tackle undernutrition.Since then, through our unique model, The Power of Nutrition has been able to invest over $500 million in 11 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia where there is an urgent need to improve nutrition. Because of these investments, more than 30 million women and children have been helped to access health and nutrition services. We were pleased to be selected as an accelerator by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation at UNGA 2017.The welfare and care of women approaching motherhood and children under five sit at the heart of our approach. Undernutrition is the underlying cause of 45% of all child mortality, and the reason that one in four children globally grow up with stunted bodies and brains. Improving nutrition for children in their first five years can change the trajectory of their lives forever, improving long-term health, educational attainment, and enabling them to reach their full potential.Investing in nutrition also has a transformational impact on communities and the economic welfare of whole countries – reducing the burden on healthcare systems and laying the foundations for sustainable economic growth and development. The Power of Nutrition places a strong emphasis on collaboration and partnership when thinking through our programmatic interventions. We do not implement programmes ourselves but work with and through our partners – seeking to improve and strengthen existing systems rather than duplicate them. Our founding partners include the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, the UBS Optimus Foundation, the UK’s Department for International Development, UNICEF and the World Bank. We are pleased that a further 15 private sector institutions have partnered with us.

Managing DirectorLions Head Global Partners Feb 2012 - Jun 2015London, United KingdomLion's Head Global Partners is a UK and Kenyan based, Africa facing Merchant Bank offering Advisory, Capital Raising and Asset Management Services. We have expertise in Agriculture, Health, Education and Energy and Infrastructure as well as Financial Services. On the Fund Managment side we have recently closed a fund for the Gates Foundation. The Global Health Investment Fund I (GHIF) is a new investment vehicle which will provide financing to advance the development of drugs, vaccines, diagnostics and other interventions for diseases that disproportionately burden low-income countries. This fund has now been closed and has reached $108 million USD and has investors such as Grand Challenges Canada, KfW, IFC, CIFF. GSK, Merck amongst others. It is in part G'teed by the Gates Foundation.Energy, food security, the environment and mobilising capital in the African continent are high agenda items. Dealing with these issues and the various bodies that operate in Africa bring us into contact with muliti-laterals, NGO's, Foundations, Governments and Corporates. A particular focus for Lion's Head is on Capital raising for renewable energy projects. Amazingly even today 700 million people in Africa lack access to electricity and yet the natural resources Africa possesses would be able to turn them from relying on energy from outside the continent to a net exporter within a lifetime. Many of our clients and recent mandates can be seen on our web site www.lhgp.com.Given our focus on Africa, our clients tend to include Foundations, Family Offices, Development Banks and Muliti-lateral organisations. Also there is a growing desire to see the Impact Finance 'space' being better defined and assessed. It remains a challenging landscape with perhaps too much wishful thinking and not enough raw analysis. Lion's Head is seen as being one of the groups that is influencing the debate and forming the metrics needed to bridge the gap between Philanthropy and Business. -
