About Martin Stringer

I have been in Higher Education for almost thirty years. I joined the profession primarily through a love of teaching. The engagement with students, challenging their assumptions and watching them grown in critical skills and knowledge continues to give me a buzz. Over the past thirty years I have also successfully supervised 22 PhD student and 11 MPhil students, something that is extremely satisfying as a process. For much of the last ten years I have been involved in senior management, as head of Department, School and College at Birmingham University and as PVC (Education) at the University of Swansea. I have developed skills of managing people, strategic planning, financial management and the ability to deal with difficult situations (and people) without getting unduly flustered. I am particularly keen to develop measures to improve equality and diversity across the institution. In September 2022 I left Swansea to set up in consultancy, with specialisms in governance, student experience and learning, EDI and community engagment. I am an anthropologist by training, who became fascinated by Christian worship. I believe fully in interdisciplinary work and have always tried to bring together the ethnographic methodology and holistic view of the anthropologist with the theoretical rigour of sociology and the critical engagement with the real that is the root of the best theological thinking. Christian worship has remained a central concern/obsession, but more recently I have been interested in contemporary religion in the urban world, in religious diversity and most recently in superdiversity (using Birmingham as my primary fieldwork site). My ultimate aim is to try and create a 'general theory of religion'. I am also currently writing a book on the appropriation of the Dogon people in Mali by various western discourses which links my early anthropological work with a personal interest in the art of the Dogon.
