In seeking to continue my professional development I took on a role managing a range of full value stream, healthcare and industrial projects. In combination with a project management role, I have successfully taken over the functional management of the PCB team in the EMEA region, coaching a diverse range of talent. In this role I have been responsible for successful financial execution and accurate revenue projections for both projects and opportunities. Managing upwards of 5 individual P&L accounts, all with unique project teams, the key to my success in this role has been in effective management of the project team resources to ensure successful execution of the programme meeting the Customer's needs.A notable contribution during my time at Plexus was is in being responsible for bringing on board a flex-staffing capability which is utilised by the global PCB team, enabling PCB to run charge percentage efficiently by meeting the high demand needs by bringing in external agencies, whilst managing quality control and QMS compliance. Notably LDC has on occasion executed as much work as AMER (5 sites) where contractor utilisation is included. This has been a key contributor to LDC being one of the most profitable engineering sites within Plexus.

Having moved to Scotland for family reasons, this role gave me an excellent oversight and experience within the Oil and Gas industry. Responsible for the design of high density boards in acoustic down-hole tools used by the oil and gas industry. Boards must withstand extreme temperatures, vibration and shock cycles for up to 6 months.

For six years I held the role of managing director at Hot Solder. Having refocused the business from CAD Piece, I recruited two further directors. Hot Solder focused on PCB design projects as before but now employed around 10 people with skills in digital, analog, mechanical, PCB, assembly, test, supply chain and web design. The refocused business expanded into embedded tool development, an online store, sales of electronic modules to a wide customer base. We also now offered a rapid prototyping service.In additional to managing a design consultancy, the company also developed a range of internally developed products, most of which were project managed by myself. An example of one of the more complex projects comprised a complete development platform consisting of an Arduino form-factor microcontroller board with a proprietary software development environment. Using a Cortex-M3 the product offers a highly flexible solution for rapid product development. It is compatible with a large range of third party plug-in PCBs to expand its capabilities. This was distributed by several international stockists including Mouser Electronics and managed sales of over 1100 units in its first week. My roles of business development and project management on internal and external projects had a wide ranging brief and would typically include many of the following tasks: raising of funding from investors, negotiating partnerships with software firms, system architecture, managing design team activities, arranging prototyping and board production, creating documentation, creation of test solutions, packaging and distribution – essentially the full product realisation process.

The inception of this company was in 2001 as I offered my professional PCB design services to a range of blue chip clients in the UK, such as Xyratex, BAE Systems and Teradyne. With all these engagements accurate proposal creation and project execution was essential to winning and retaining an established client base. Soon after starting the business I took on several contract members of staff to assist with larger projects. In 2006 following two large contract wins to exclusively manage all EDA libraries, PCB design and schematic training for both Cobham Defence Communications and Sterling Hydraulics, we expanded into dedicated premises and I took on staff, to include two PCB designers, a mechanical design engineer and an assembly technician. This increased our capabilities and we went on to win many more lucrative and interesting contracts.As a respected expert in the Cadence EDA tool set, I also offered a range of training solutions for clients, such as a 3 day training course for 6 PCB engineers and 10 design engineers at Xyratex, using Constraint Manager for Cadence.In 2007 we further expanded our operations in sourcing high quality staff, offering customized training and addedspecialist engineering recruitment for our key customers, utilising our technical expertise, defence sector knowledge and by expanding the team to include recruitment professionals, we won exclusive recruitment contracts with companies such as Cobham DC and Parker Hannifin to recruit high quality permanent and contract members of staff. After 18 months we had recruited over 30 permanent members of staff and had more than 50 contractors deployed, including some overseas.
