I am an IT professional, data scientist and system administrator focusing on research computing for over fifteen years. With a PhD in Planetary Physics and a MSc in Remote Sensing underpinned by a Computer Science BSc, I have applied computational resources and methods to a variety of research disciplines, most recently in the field of bioinformatics at the John Innes Centre. I've procured, built and managed High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters, storage and virtualisation infrastructure and acted as a consultant for several research institutions in their infrastructure needs. I've worked on a variety of research projects, authored several high profile papers which have been cited widely and write open source software for the bioinformatics community. In my free time I enjoy hiking, SCUBA diving, general computer geekery and building things.

Senior ScientistJohn Innes Centre Jan 2022 - PresentNorwichI work on a variety of genomics projects, most recently working with Pisum sativum, Marchantia, Wheat and Brassica. I've also been involved in over a million pounds of infrastructure procurement (GPU HPC compute and distributed storage), sit on the Scientific Computing Committee and Research Computing Operations Group as well as leading the development of Remote Sensing capability for plant phenotyping using drones. -
Post Doctoral Scientist (Bioinformatics)John Innes Centre May 2016 - Dec 2021Norwich, United KingdomWorking in the Feng lab at the JIC to investigate the epigenetic regulation of genome-wide changes in chromatin as the plant germline develops. My research examines the epigenetic effect of transposable elements, highly repetitive regions of DNA which until quite recently have largely been considered to be non-functional or junk. I support the bioinfomatics needs of the lab members, developing new tools and performing analysis on a variety of data sets. I work with several genomic and high-throughput sequencing datasets such as RNA-seq, Bisulfite-seq, ChIP-seq and pacbio SMRT-seq. -
Data Manager/Hpc Systems AdministratorAberystwyth University - Institute Of Biological, Environmental And Rural Sciences May 2013 - May 2016AberystwythI co-ordinate the provision of research computing resources for the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) at Aberystwyth University. I built and currently manage the virtualisation environment to provide local cloud computing services for IBERS staff and collaborators. I am the Systems Administrator for the High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster as well as essential services such as back-end databases, front facing web-services, internal proprietary applications and also local instances of commonly used bioinformatics services. -
Computer Support OfficerAberystwyth University - Institute Of Mathematics And Physics May 2012 - May 2013AberystywythIn this role I support all aspects of computing within the institute. This includes dealing with day-to-day issues for individual users, such as desktop computers, printing and student lab machines. I am responsible for ensuring shared resources such as file stores, print and licence servers and domain controllers are up-to-date, secure and accessible. I also assist in specialist work to develop imagery for 3D screens, GPU coding in CUDA and assisting with High Performance Computing projects. -
Systems AdministratorAberystwyth University - Institute Of Biological, Environmental And Rural Sciences Feb 2012 - May 2012AberystwythWith the expansion of the Bioinformatics group at Aberystwyth University, a new High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster was purchased. My role for three months was to set-up the system, perform software installations, backups, define user policy, queue management and security. An important aspect was to train researchers how best to take advantage of the facilities, develop work flows and encourage collaborative projects between departments. Upon completion of the three month contract I have continued to maintain the IBERS HPC until the role is filled permanently.
