Martina Hernandez, Ph.D. Email and Phone Number
I recently earned my Doctor of Philosophy in Neuroscience, and as a graduate student I was aNIH Blueprint Diversity Specialized Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Advancement in Neuroscience (D-SPAN) Awardee, and Southern Regional Educational Board (SREB) Doctoral Scholar. I previously studied neuronal membrane perturbation in a model of diffuse traumatic brain injury, particularly a NeuN negative subpopulation. I also investigated the effects of intracranial pressure (ICP) on late membrane disrupted neurons and the possible molecular mechanisms. Previously, I obtained my Bachelor's in Chemistry, concentration in Biochemistry with a minor and focused background in Biology.I am interested in studying the molecular and physiological components that are related to migraine and associated pathology.Creative Director and Writer on the Neuroscience podcast, Crossmodal, started by Neuroscience graduate students. https://anchor.fm/crossmodal

Graduate Student ResearcherVirginia Commonwealth University Aug 2017 - Sep 2023Richmond, Virginia AreaMy project focuses on the pathology of neuronal membrane perturbation in a rat model of diffuse traumatic brain injury. Currently, I am using a combination of histological analyses, protein quantification, and protein assays to investigate the possible molecular mechanisms that underlie this particular pathology. -
Undergraduate Research AssistantVirginia Commonwealth University Jun 2015 - May 2017Richmond, Virginia AreaDuring this time, I was in Dr. Jeffrey Dupree's lab, where they investigated the specialized axonal domain, the axon initial segment (AIS). The AIS was studied in a rodent model of multiple sclerosis and other models of inflammatory diseases. Techniques I used/learned include:ImmunocytochemistryRNA isolationPCRRT-qPCRConfocal MicroscopyWestern BlottingGel electrophoresisCryosectioningCell counting -
