For 12 years I worked in various in-house roles in financial and fintech organisations, working with both inspiring leaders as well as some truly awful ones. Those roles where I worked under poor leadership were the ones I least enjoyed, performed worst and couldn’t wait to leave at the earliest opportunity. With corporate promotions and when I started my own PR agency and hired a team I became an ‘accidental’ leader. It didn't take long to realise that leadership is not always as easy as it looks through the employee lens, and I quickly learned that I needed to learn how to lead and manage people well if my business function or my own business was going to succeed! I engaged a coach to help me develop my communication, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and time management skills . In my position as a business founder I consistently invested in training to develop these interpersonal skills which were essential for managing and getting the best from my team of freelance, remote employees.And it worked …From 2018 – 2020 when myself and my husband went on a 2-year cycling adventure from London to New Zealand, my team not only maintained the business, but thrived, increasing our client bases and boosting revenues by 120%! I started as a solopreneur and as my business grew I hired a team of freelancers to help deliver client B2B marketing campaigns. Leading and managing the team became as much my job as the client work and I successfully developed team cohesion and performance to the level that I took a 2-year sabbatical with my team running the business - very successfully - in my absence. Client base increased and a revenue increase of 120% over 2 years!

Myself and my husband undertook a 2-year long distance trip on our road bikes that took us from London to New Zealand via Scandinavia, Europe, India, South Asia, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand – returning to London 2 days before the first Covid lockdown. A journey that spanned 28 countries and 35,500km – with my team in London managing and growing my PR & Consulting business. I led the global marketing strategy, internal and external communications and PR for the market-leading institutional foreign exchange trading platform. The role involved strategic and tactical communication and marketing at both corporate and product level, specifically brand development and management, strategic marketing planning and delivery, and managing third-party relationships including suppliers, agencies and marketing partners. Managing a team of four as well as navigating the challenges of managing upwards to board level were as much part of my job as delivering marketing outputs. Looking back at this experience I realise that coaching and training to improve my leadership skills would have really helped me become a better people manager and to manage my stress levels!
