About Martin Antonetti

Educator, curator, and historian in the fields of contemporary artists’ books and the history of the book, including illustration, binding, design, and typography. Currently I teach courses in the history and art of the book at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts (my second time around at Smith), and serve as the Printer in Residence at Historic Deerfield, Inc. I am also in private practice offering bibliographic and curatorial services for libraries and private collectors. Until 2020 I was the Director of Distinctive Collections at Northwestern University Libraries where I oversaw the operations of the Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections and University Archives, the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies, the Transportation Library, the Art Library, the Music Library, and the division’s Archival Processing unit. Before that--in my first time around at Smith--I was the curator of rare books in the Mortimer Rare Book Room at the Smith College Libraries. In 2011 I founded the Book Studies Concentration at Smith, the first undergraduate program of its kind in the country. Before Smith College I was librarian and director of the Grolier Club in New York City, the country’s premiere organization for bibliophiles. I've also held curatorial and teaching positions at Mills College and the University of Oregon. Over the course of my career I've written and lectured widely in the history of the book, including fine printing, letterforms, bookbinding, and book collecting. I've also served in various capacities on the boards of Hand Papermaking, the Book Arts Press, the American Printing History Association and, most recently, as the president of the Bibliographical Society of America, the oldest scholarly society in North America dedicated to the study of books and manuscripts as physical objects. For almost 40 years I've been associated with Rare Book School at the University of Virginia in one capacity or another; currently I'm on the faculty and teach a book history course each summer. I've also taught courses for the Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science. A classicist by training, I received my MLS from Columbia University in New York, where I specialized in rare books and special collections librarianship.
