Headed up a team managing communications, publishing, website / social media, public issues, world church relations and heritage for the Methodist Church. Highlights and achievements included:- implemented changes in team structure and people to build closer dialogue with the church at large, make us more proactive in our publishing and improve flexibility in our ways of working;- steered through a new strategy for global relationships, aimed at keeping the best of existing World Church programmes while making space for new work, and reported to a global oversight committee in implementing the agreed changes;- brought our overseas programmes into much closer partnership with the work of All We Can, a related but separate charity;- held responsibility for the complete renewal of the website and development of new content areas;- created a Publishing Board to oversee a fresh approach to Methodist publishing;- supported the expansion of the Joint Public Issues Team to include three other Churches and ensured that its work was sustained during the frequent absence of a key staff member needed on other work;- personal learning during a visit to Jerusalem and the West Bank where I was fortunate to be able to meet with and hear from individuals and groups from both the Israeli and Palestinian communities.

A one-year contract to manage the International Logistics team at Tearfund, a Christian charity with a mission to release people worldwide from poverty. Tearfund works both operationally in the field in a number of countries, including Sudan and DRC, and through many local partner organisations elsewhere. The UK-based Logistics team has a brief to support both type of project. Responsibilities / challenges of the role included:• Review and simplification of Tearfund procedures for procurement, vehicle fleet management, etc;• Implementation of new reporting from the field;• Work with Oxfam and other agencies on a joint project to enhance the ability of our partners to respond to disasters in their respective countries;• Supporting team deployment in the Philippines and elsewhere, as well as managing our ongoing support for the existing operational programmes;• Creation of an intranet presence for the Finance & Logistics group.

Managed retail, subscription and bulk channels for the FT.Responsibilities and achievements included:• Repositioned the FT strategically from being almost entirely a retail product in UK to having 40% of its sale via subscriptions.• Exercised responsibility for over £30m of annual revenue within UK, and around £15m of EMEA distribution costs, budgeting annually and reforecasting quarterly.• Implemented spreadsheet-based monthly/weekly sales reporting and forecasting, created a wide variety of analysis and reports for senior management.• Modelled pricing scenarios and developed econometric analysis of the price elasticity of sales.• Identified a source of voucher fraud and put case together for Northumbria Police.• Reduced UK distribution costs by around 20% through retendering, also locked down wholesaling costs through long-term contract negotiation.• Created a newspaper subscription delivery operation, working closely with key partners and eventually becoming non-exec director of 2theDoor Ltd.• Planned and managed operations at times of “special events” such as elections and 9/11.• Managed FT external relationship with Newspaper Publishers Association, Office of Fair Trading and other parties. Negotiated an industry-wide “Focus on Distribution” accord.• Brought in “third party” titles as customers, creating and building up a niche distribution activity which contributed approx £0.25m annually to the business.• Worked across the organisation with Marketing and others on subscription and retail programmes and pricing strategy.• Managed distribution and sales teams of up to 25 people.• Identified needs of individual staff, ensuring appropriate training given where required and assisting several to make career moves to other functions in the organisation.

Worked on Distribution and Logistics projects for clients including European Commission, Hasbro Europe, Magyar Posta, Arjo Wiggins Appleton, NMPP, Asda, Do It All, Microsoft Europe.Biggest single project was for Nike Europe: recommended a pan-European distribution strategy into which the client invested in excess of $100 million.
