Conjoint A/ Prof Martin Cohen completed his training in medicine at The University of Sydney in 1996. He completed postgraduate training in psychiatry and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP -2001). Martin led inpatient and outpatient clinical teams for several years. Subsequently he took on the position of Director of Specialist Training for Hunter New England Mental Health Services for 8 years. During this period he developed arguably one of the strongest specialist training programs in Australia and New Zealand. It became the preferred trainer of specialists for Tasmania, the Northern Territory, rural NSW and the ACT. He left this role to assume the role of Executive Director of Mental Health for Hunter New England Local Health District and a member of the Executive Leadership team. In this role he was directly responsible for 1500 FTE and a budget in excess of $130M. He has acted as CEO for the District, which employs 16000 staff and has a budget in excess of $2.2B.After leaving his role of Executive Director, Martin was appointed to the board of the District, taking on responsibility for Safety and Quality.As clinical lead and a Director of Procare Martin has worked to develop novel models of care under his own steam in the private context. Academia: Martin is a Conjoint Associate Professor of the University of Newcastle. He was awarded his PhD in 2015. His Dissertation Thesis won the Section of Addiction Psychiatry Dissertation Prize of the RANZCP. Martin has over 70 publications and 650 citations and in excess of 2M in competitive grants. He has been a lead investigator on national epidemiological studies, neuroimaging studies, clinical protocol trials and has supervised PhD students. He has made numerous media appearances and is a sought after public speaker.

I am particularly strong in managing fiscal challenges, have extensive experience in human resources management and in understanding complex organisations rapidly so as to be able to find value without disruptive approaches. This is particularly important in our complex health environments.
