The Science Research Mentor Program places high-achieving high school Juniors and Seniors with research mentors at the American Museum of Natural History. As a mentor, I guide a group of student through the basics of computational genomics research all the way up to professional-level skills.

My research combines statistical and computational methods with molecular genomics data to examine how genomes change over all time scales, from a single generation to all that has happened since the beginning of life on the planet. I specialize in developing computational pipelines for high-throughput analysis of long- and short-read next-generation sequencing data. These pipelines are for de novo genome assembly and annotation, variant analysis, and numerous specialized functions such as primer design for selective whole-genome amplification and identifying genome regions evolving extremely rapidly. In addition to my research, I teach bioinformatics, evolutionary genomics, and advanced computational methods for genome analysis at the Richard Guilder Graduate School and am the leader of the Genomics and Computational Biology research group.

I teach graduate and undergraduate Bioinformatics in the Department of Computer and Information Science. These are project-based courses that use problem-solving as the basis for learning through extensive in class labs and problem sets. In the classes, we focus on using real data and applying them to actual bioinformatic questions using UNIX, shell scripting, sed, and awk - main tools of the trade. The course also focuses on using high-performance computing clusters and pipelining using custom scripts and incorporating command line tools such as BLAST+.
