About Dr. V. J. Martinez

Social justice is my passion, and my purpose is to advance it. For nearly fifteen years, I have devoted my career to serving minoritized communities, and creating opportunities where DEIB can strengthen individual confidence and community experiences. Because I was the first and only in all of my academic settings, I became an educator to role model what is possible for a first generation student of color. I served as an administrator and taught college courses. But as racial injustice in the country escalated, I wanted to expand my reach of support and founded VJ Consulting for Social Inclusion, providing organizations across sectors tools to advance equity and inclusion. Understanding culture shifts with the people but climate changes at the leadership level, I became the inaugural dean of diversity at Carnegie Mellon University's conservatory - creating a new diversity department and council, implementing new processes and policies to increase student, staff and faculty recruitment and retention, and in partnership with a colleague and The Lullaby Project, created a course on healing trauma through music. When Roe was overturned, I realized the health inequities that women of color, especially Black, Indigenous, and Latinas, face would increase. I chose to leave higher education to advance racial health equity initiatives at Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Working across sectors, I can confirm DEIB expertise is an under utilized asset in this country and a powerful one, which is why it is under attack. It is a transferable expertise that can advance any organization, but more importantly, can be used to advance our communities. Skills and competencies include: relational leadership, training, curriculum design, mentorship, community building, teaching, program management, project design, organizational change management, and consulting with specialties in social justice pedagogies. I have a doctorate in education from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN., in Leadership and Learning Organizations, I hold a Master of Science in Education from Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY, with a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Women and Gender Studies. I also hold a dual Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Communication Studies with concentrations in political rhetoric and interpersonal communication from Wilkes University, Wilkes-Barre, PA.
