About Martin Holicky

I co-founded and lead a near-infrared spectroscopy sensing company, Matoha, enabling circular economy around the world with our textile and plastics identification devices. I have ten years of sensing R&D experience, including in spectroscopy and electrochemistry, as well as embedded system programming, full-stack development and machine learning experience. I have a Chemistry degree from Imperial College London where I'm currently also pursuing a PhD on the highly prestigious President's Scholarship.

I co-founded and lead a start-up enabling global recycling of plastics and fabrics through our highly innovative sorting technology. Large companies use our machines to sort textile waste whilst NGOs and universities are using our machines to identify waste from the ocean and educate the public on the challenges in implementing the circular economy.Along the way we won multiple competitions, giving us the funds to start the company. We have bootstrapped Matoha without an external investment to first sales and then received a £125k pre-seed round in 2022 from an angel investor to expand our operations. Our vision, to make affordable, scalable and reliable solutions for the circular economy, drives us to continuously innovate and introduce new products - keep an eye out what we'll introduce this year ;) Show less

I've led a small research team with a focus on developing ultraportable electrochemical analysis devices and sensors. We create a postage-stamp-sized potentiostat which we successfully integrated into a smartphone for ultra-portable sensing. I've started in Vestigen as an intern (aged 15) and quickly gained responsibilities as my skills evolved - after 3 years I was responsible for 3 other people and leading the instrument design. Vestigen was an amazing experience and enabled me to develop my skills in advanced ultra-low-noise electronics design, embedded systems and electrochemical biosensing.I've presented the results of my work at the large international competition of high school projects, Intel ISEF 2015 in Pittsburgh, USA, where I won 3rd place in the embedded systems category. As part of an internship (enabled by my high school teacher, Pavol Nemec) my classmate and I have designed a temperature microsensor. The extremely helplful staff at the Slovak Academy of Sciences manufactured a photomask using EBL using our designs and we then manufactured a number of the sensors with UV photolitography. We have characterised the sensor by measuring the resistance at various temperatures down to -197 C in liquid nitrogen and using scanning electron microscopy.
