The Woodland Trust is committed to protecting and enhancing native woodland. I work to set up and manage ancient woodland restoration projects through partnerships with other organisations and contracts with commercial forestry consultants in the south-east and east of England.My work is involved with the restoration and protection of ancient woodlands where a gradual approach to removing the conifer crop where possible, is advocated and backed up by research work by the Oxford Forestry Institute. Tracking and helping deal with invasive species in ancient woodlands, such as Rhododendron, is also a component of my work. To do this work it is necessary to use GIS to analyse geospatial data and remote sensing satellite data, and to research methods to process this data.I also a keen interest in QGIS open source GIS software and lead on the introduction of QGIS use in the Outreach team and projects, organise training for Woodland Trust staff and provide technical support. This has led onto me to set up, and adminster a PostGIS database on a cloud server to share data across teams.Prior to this I ran a woodland management and arboricultural business and as such have over 12 years’ experience 'on-the tools’ as well as professional experience providing arboricultural consultancy, woodland management planning, woodland grant scheme applications, tree inventory and safety surveys.Specialties: Woodland management; Countryside stewardship grant schemes; Ancient woodland restoration; Project management; Competitive tender writing and evaluation; QGIS and GIS mapping; Remote sensing and processing; Orchard planning and planting; Tree safety inspection and vegetation-related subsidence surveys and reports.
