About Martin Stead
Growing a business is never easy, but if you’re an Accidental Entrepreneur, chances are you will feel the challenges more acutely. Unlike those who started their business intentionally, you likely started your business because your skills were in high demand, and before you knew it, you were hiring a team to help keep up with that demand. Realising its potential, you started implementing growth strategies to take your venture to the next level, but as things have progressed, you’ve found your ambition outpacing your knowledge, and each day felt less equipped to meet the demands of your business. It's a scenario I’ve seen play out multiple times. As the Managing Director of an award-winning Facilities Management company in the north of England for over a decade, I worked closely with numerous trades businesses and became skilled at spotting an accidental entrepreneur verses an intentional entrepreneur. The stress and struggle behind the eyes of an accidental entrepreneur was palpable. And I knew that, for all the strain they were putting upon themselves and their families, their efforts weren’t going to pay off in the long run. They provided a fantastic service and were great to work with, but behind the scenes they were frantic and lacked the necessary systems, processes and culture required to create a scalable asset. And because of this, I knew that, when it came time to retire, they’d find the business not worth what they thought, and struggle to sell.Building the facilities management company from £1.5m with 10 employees to £8m with 100 employees, a 250% growth in 8 years, I identified that there are 10 business elements, plus leadership and communication, that must be meticulously integrated for seamless performance – just as the threads of a loom must be carefully interwoven to create a cohesive fabric. And this is exactly how I help. I partner with ambitious business owners to integrate these principles, so they have the choice to sustain, scale or sell their business. If you’re curious about the principles of the Loom and how well your business measures against them, I invite you to take my quick Scorecard. You’ll receive a personalised ‘Weave Report’ detailing where you may need to pay more attention in your business to achieve seamless performance. Building on the principles of a Loom, I lead my clients through the process of creating cohesive business operations by identifying the threads within their business that require improvement. Here’s how I help:EXPANSION PLANSince making change in one area inevitably impacts upon another, all Looms begin with identifying exactly where all the problems within the business lie. You’ll receive a comprehensive project plan detailing how well the functions within your business are operating and where attention is needed. You’ll receive a project plan outlining exactly how to go about the transformation.IMPLEMENTATIONUsing my knowledge and experience, I’ll work with you and your teams to drive through the changes, overseeing developments, so we successfully manage the impact of change, ensure no stitches are dropped and you achieve a seamless weave. Managing Director
Sewell Facilities Management is part of the wider Sewell Group – a multi-discipline group of companies delivering investment solutions, construction projects, estate consultancy and strategic direction to a broad range of customers across the north of England. For ten years, I was the Managing Director for the Facilities Management company. During this time, I grew the company by 250%, taking it from £1.5m to £8m with 10 to 100 employees in 8 years. I built a strong culture of growth and accountability which led to us being awarded The Sunday Times ‘Best Company to Work’ for 9 consecutive years and achieving 3-Star accreditation in the UK Best Companies Survey, which distinguished Sewell as a ‘World Class’ company to work for. When I came into position, the company was what I would describe as a ‘Western set’. It performed well and looked good from the outside, but it had no substance behind it. Customers were happy with our response times and were always met with a smile, but it lacked the systems and processes critical for growth. Only those who worked in the office had the full picture of what was going on, and those working off site relied on them to receive the right information. As the company grew, I ensured our business systems and processes developed in line demand and set a new industry standard for quality, which was reflected in our two IWFM awards, an unprecedented achievement for an SME.New procedures enabled us to keep tight financial control and dramatically improve efficiency, resulting in outstanding pre-tax profits. I also introduced significant changes to our recruitment process to ensure we hired the right people and our culture aligned with our growth plans. We recognised as a ‘Best Place to Work’ on the Sunday Times List.
Group Director
Having led Sewell Facilities Management through significant growth (250%) as Managing Director, I also became a Group Director, overseeing development of the companies within the Sewell’s group of companies. Each month, I met with the Sewell’s group of Managing Directors, including the company secretary and chair, to set and manage the strategic direction for the group of companies’ worth £100m.
Commercial Manager
Having joined Sewell as an apprentice straight from school, I was delighted to return to the company as Commercial Manager overseeing many contracts including the government led Private Finance Initiatives (PFI) scheme. During my four years, I won several large contracts for the company, which placed significant demand on the company and an urgency to upgrade its systems and processes. I saw first-hand the impact poorly developed systems can have on customer service and morale. I witnessed individuals becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of information flowing to them and how it compromised their ability to make the right decisions. The culture that had worked so well when the team was small began to shift and required us to very intentional when hiring to make sure we got the right people with right attitude and mindset, so become a cohesive team and a great place to work.Understanding the problems and what was needed, I was promoted to Managing Director. I introduced significant changes which allowed us to grow the company by 250% and become recognised as a ‘Best Place to Work’ on the Sunday Times List, and the Queens Award for Enterprise Promoting Opportunity through Social Mobility. My daily routine included preparing budgets, monthly operational accounts and procedures for term subcontracts, producing written and commercial aspects for bids for PFI schemes, including providing a 25-year lifecycle model.
Independent Quantity Surveyor
Operating as a Freelance Quantity Surveyor, I worked for several construction companies providing support during the completion stage of a projects. Projects were commercial in nature and ranged from £0.5m to £5m in size. Typically, I found the project to be in a worse condition than stated which required me to present the issues to management and find ways to limit the damage. After one year working independently, I was offered an opportunity I couldn’t refuse from Sewell, the company where I’d completed my education via apprenticeship, as Commerical Manager, which I accepted.
Commercial Manager
Beal Developments is a family-owned company with a portfolio of companies, developing residential and commercial scheme, land dealings, property investment and farming.Joining the company, I was responsible for the commercial performance of sites across East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. I created and managed strong supply chain and quality assurance to ensure houses were built within budget and to a high standard.
Commercial Manager
As Commercial Manager, I was responsible for all commercial aspects of a regional dry-lining contractor, including developing and managing a team of quantity surveyors and implementing the relevant commercial protocols.
Quantity Surveyor
Working on the new 25,000-seater sports stadium for Hull City AFC and Hull FC.
Quantity Surveyor
For seven years, I trained as a Quantity Surveyor taking day release once a week to travel, first to Hull College and then to Nottingham Trent University. I worked full-time, building up my skills and experience, before taking a gap year travelling and working for similar companies in Australia.
Management Trainee
Thrown out onto a building site straight from school, I gained an induction to all facets of a construction company gaining exposure to all departments as well as spending 18-months on site.
