HV and Electromagnetics Engineer with specialist knowledge and experience of UHF methods for detecting, monitoring and locating partial discharges in high voltage equipment such as power transformers, gas-insulated switchgear and cables. I am a Chartered Electrical & Electronic Engineer with more than 30 years’ experience in industry (R&D, production), academia (research, teaching, management) and as a business owner. I was recently Chair of the Universities High Voltage Network in the UK and have been a Guest Professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China. My areas of expertise include partial discharges, high voltage insulation systems, UHF sensors, generation & measurement of ultra-fast electrical transients, FDTD modelling, sensors and energy harvesting. I have considerable previous experience of designing and testing microwave components and systems (UHF to 94 GHz); manufacture of gas-filled waveguide receiver protectors (L-band to J-band); management of high-value research projects; safe operation of HV facilities, and all levels of University teaching. From 2001 to 2014, I managed the High Voltage Laboratory at the University of Strathclyde, latterly as Professor of HV Technologies. I founded High Frequency Diagnostics in 2014 to develop new technologies involving sensor systems, diagnostics and energy harvesting in condition monitoring and asset management applications.
Listed skills include Electrical Engineering, Engineering, Power Systems, High Voltage, and 24 others.
