I'm an architect and urbanist and founding partner of CITYFÖRSTER creating better places. My focus is on strategic area development and international projects. I'm specifically interested in the socio-economic impact of architecture and urbanism and have 15+ years experience in a variety of contexts. I combine a strong vision of where we should be as a society that respects the planetary boundaries with the pragmatism of what is possible NOW in a specific context. Be that Germany, The Netherlands, the Western Balkan or Southern Africa.With a core team of 40+ people we work on all scales of the built environment. Current project include an inner-city development of 100.000sqm in Bratislava - SK, a framework plan for the former government District in Bonn- DE, the 500 unit Eco Village in Hannover- DE, a Waterfront Development at the Albanian Riviera including two 5 Star Hotels and a Sponge-City development in Hefei-CN. Cities are one of the most efficient means to establish sustainable and qualitative lifestyles. To understand this complex system we need to embrace its diversity, liveliness and complexity and understand the interaction of its different elements: ‘The city - just like the forest - is defined by its constant change’. It is our task to find new ways to stimulate and manage this complexity and to create environments in which society and individuals can thrive, rather than imposing simplistic blueprint visions. I studied Landscape Architecture and Architecture at Universities in Hanover and Oslo and in 2005 completed a Postgraduate Programme at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam. I have been involved academically throughout my career, both in NL and internationally. Most recently I held a guest professorship for urban design at the Riga International School of Economics and Business Administration. Since 2018 I focus primarily on my practice, which includes design but also research and advisory to governments, institutions and non-governmental organizations. Specialist topics are sustainable tourism, carbon capture through nature-based-solutions and the interrelation of these with the built environment.
