1979-81 Arabic Training reaching Higher standard1981-84 Muscat, Oman (Third, then Second Secretary - Information and Technical Assistance) supporting a better understanding of the UK in Oman and helping to promote the UK technical assistance programme to Oman, primarily in the area of agriculture.1984-87 London (United Nations Department – ECOSOC Desk) monitoring and co-ordinating the UK’s participation in UN discussions on global economic development and aid to developing countries1987-90 Jerusalem (Consul – political, consular and trade promotion ) representing UK political and commercial interests in the Palestinian territories, providing regular reporting on Palestinian issues, protection of UK citizens in the Occupied Territories, supporting UK trade with Palestine.1990-92 Hong Kong (Secondment to the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, Manager External Relations) providing regular briefing to external groups and institutions on the Bank, media relations, event support, Group level corporate communications support for the British Bank of the Middle East (now HSBC Bank Middle East).1992-96 London (Environment, Science and Energy Department, Head of Energy Section) providing a co-ordination point for UK government energy policy for international energy fora, including the International Energy Agency, UNCTAD, the United Nations General Assembly and ECOSOC. Specific focus on European Energy Charter, and on Nuclear Safety issues (ie the international movement of spent nuclear fuel for reprocessing).1996-1998 Kenya (First Secretary, Head of Commercial Department) promoting UK-Kenya bilateral trade, UK investment in Kenya, the protection of UK commercial interests in Kenya, and promotion of Kenya as an investment destination to UK industry, through newsletters, trade missions, presentations to regional groups and general communications.
