Martin Styner is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry with a joint appointment in the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). He is the director of the UNC Neuro Image Analysis Laboratory and co-director of the Neuroimaging core of the UNC Neurodevelopmental Disorders Research Center. His main field of research is in medical image processing and analysis. He has an extensive background in anatomical structure and tissue segmentation, morphometry using shape analysis, modeling and atlas building, diffusion tensor image analysis, registration, and machine learning. His current research focuses on structural and connectivity based brain analyses within the developing brain in humans, and non-human primates.Specialties: brain development, Autism Spectrum Disorder, morphometry, structural brain connectivity, diffusion MRI, translational models, segmentation, atlas building

Associate DirectorNeuro Image Analysis Laboratory, Unc Chapel Hill 2007 - PresentNeuro Image Research And Analysis Laboratories, Chapel HillUNC Neuro Image Research and Analysis Laboratory; Department of PsychiatryThe Neuro Image Research and Analysis Laboratory (NIRAL) was founded in 1998 at the department of Psychiatry by Dr. Guido Gerig and Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman, with the mission to support ongoing large neuroimaging studies with state-of-the-art image analysis technology, expertise and resources. In 2007, Martin Styner and Aysenil Belger jointly took over as the directorship of the NIRAL, with Martin Styner directing the structural and diffusion tensor imaging group, and Aysenil Belger directing the functional MRI group. The remainder of this document only discusses the structural and diffusion tensor imaging group at the NIRAL. The joint appointment of Dr Styner at the departments of Computer Science and Psychiatry guarantees that the laboratories get access to the latest image analysis technology and methods but in return test and validate newly developed methods. The lab serves structural brain imaging studies primarily in the department of Psychiatry but provides infrastructure and service to all researchers conducting human, primate and small animal brain imaging studies. At the NIRAL, Dr. Styner supervises over 23 researchers, students, staff and interns. Joseph Blocher is the laboratory’s associate manager for clinical studies, and Gerald Long is the system administrator. Two other full time programmers with medical image analysis expertise develop and run tools as part of several clinical neuroimaging studies funded by NIH. Three full time research assistants have been trained as expert rater for manual segmentations of all major brain structures and are experts in running the lab’s software packages. The lab hosts several additional trainees with MD degrees, medical and computer science students and postdoctoral fellows involved in the development of new tools and in testing and validation.
