While was working at Direct Response Group, Woodall began a small side consulting business focusing on software support for Dallas companies that had purchased TI mini-computers. He eventually spun this off into a new venture selling accounting software for TI mini-computers and a new multi-terminal, multi-processor micro-computer by Televideo. At the time, the Televideo system was state-of-the-art, with up to 16 stations with individual processors, and an attached 20MB file server. Woodall’s one man operation thrived due to the fact that he had the only multi-station computers and accounting software in Dallas. As revenues increased, he moved to a 300 sq. ft. office in north Dallas. As "PC" began to become a popular term, IBM, Toshiba, and Compaq prepared to release their first personal computers.

Soon, this part-time job at a low-tech marketing company was paying twice what his TI salary was, even though the TI job involved developing top secret military systems. Scientist Jan 1961 - Dec 1967
In Hamlin West Virginia, Charles Yeager is the biggest hero there is. Martin Woodall’s dad was friends with Yeager growing up, and knew him as "Chuck" well before the rest of the world did. They graduated from Hamlin High together in 1941 and, six years later, Chuck Yeager would become the first man to travel faster than the speed of sound. When Woodall and his brother graduated from Hamlin years later, Chuck had already inspired their interest in flying, rockets, and technology. His brother had the characteristics of a young engineer, while Martin was more of a budding scientist. While awaiting their chance to test prototype aircraft like Chuck did, the Woodall boys began preparing with more modest flying machines...model airplanes. Their first missions included flying planes that were controlled by a wire. These planes were able to fly in circles around the operator, but could perform some interesting maneuvers, such as inverted flight. At age 10, Martin moved to radio-controlled (RC) airplanes when his parents bought him a Heath Kit RC system, which he soldered together himself. After some initial production problems, the kit flew as intended. Martin also drove RC cars and built and flew a balsa wood RC airplane put together with glue and Mylar-covered wings—shrunk to fit with a clothes iron. His production wasn't perfect but the craft taxied beautifully, controlled by a handheld transmitter. Years later, when he saw the movie October Sky, Woodall immediately felt a connection to the young scientist Homer Hickam. Hickam was raised in a coal mining town in West Virginia and had an infatuation with flying. Woodall remembered his own time launching model rockets, which he graduated to around age 12. Built from cardboard tubes, balsa wood, and powered by Estes rocket engines, his flying career at that time culminated with his most successful launch--a two stage rocket with a mouse payload which successfully returned to the West Virginia hills via parachute.
