ExperienceI began working in the field just two to three mornings a week helping young adults with disability get ready for and get into work. I’d been unwell myself and during what was a long, slow rehabilitation I was asked if I might be able to do this part-time job. I fell in love with it because I found myself in an environment where eager teenagers were just so keen to please and prove themselves—I couldn’t let these kids down.Now, heading for thirty years later, I still see the same thing. People come in—they want to work, I want them to work. They’re eager and they’re hungry to prove themselves as equally valuable employees.In the business of finding a place where potential taxpayers, despite their disability, become valued members of their teams, I’ve got to be inventive. That’s still a challenge and I still get a buzz out of it.NOVA directly employs 100 people who also enjoy the task of placing people into meaningful employment. Up to thirty per cent of my staff have a disability and the fact is they’re among some of the most productive workers I’ve got.Specialties: - Support for people with disability with an emphasis on vocational assistance. - Extensive history working with people who have experienced mental illness. Australian employers are distinctive in that if I put something reasonable to them, they’ll give you a go.NOVA taps into a marvellous resource available through the men and women who come to us for support and assistance. When I started 26 years ago, I was impressed by their talent and value. I’m still impressed by that now.But here’s the unmet need.It costs from $8000 to $20,000 to turn a person with a profound disability into a taxpayer. There are 820,000 Australians living on the disability support pension. A large number of these people are keen to move from welfare to work. Given the opportunity, these men and women are not afraid of participation and getting them to move to the role of taxpayer would do so much for us as a country. With a little investment, each individual becomes a fully paid up member of the team—no longer a burden of charity or an object of pity. He or she brings value to their employer, has a sense of self worth and dignity, and inspires others. They have shedloads to offer.
