Professor Emeritus, Formerly Sally Michelson Davidson Professor Of Chinese Arts And Cultures

Current

Ann Arbor, Mi

My research over forty years has been rooted in the study of social practice in imperial China, especially administrative theory and practice, administrative law, judicial practice, and social norms. In addition to the use of theoretical essays or administrative and legal documents for these purposes, I also makes use of visual art and literary works that directly address social and political issues. During the past decade I began researching how Enlightenment intellectuals in England interpreted and adapted Chinese policy documents translated into French and English as a means of bolstering their struggle for social justice and human rights. The results of this research suggest that Enlightenment values such as equality under the law or freedom of speech are by no means unique to the European tradition. It would appear instead that these values evolved in an intellectual environment that was thoroughly, and necessarily global. These findings seriously undermine ultra-nationalist claims for cultural uniqueness, and at the same time weaken claims that China should be treated as exceptional in matters of human rights.
