A principle partner in QuickDog, Inc., a venture funded, entity, which grew to sixty employees before it was sold in 2002. Responsible for designing, managing the development (12 engineers), and running back-end search and categorization systems in support of a multi-gigabyte, 24/7 consumer shopping search engine. The system included: a custom-built production crawler, data feed interface, and extraction engine, GUI tools for semi-automated data processing and categorization, real-time search and extraction of prices for products, system status reporting; and full text search. Developed (in partnership with NEC) a web enabled visual shopping system, which used an image-based search interface and digital asset management system to browse, search and select products for purchase.
Created, managed, an applied research and development group for the Information Sciences Institute (A research arm of the University of Southern California). I was hired to create a technology group that would both work in the visual arts and education, and partner with industry, government, and the military creating tools, services, demonstrations, and technology partnerships. A secondary goal was to evolve the division into a profit making concern. The areas of research and development were, thesaural-based information retrieval strategies, image based web query tools, technologies and models, information harvesting, clustering and categorization models and tools.
Successfully created, and managed an applied research and development group of twelve for the Getty Information Institute. The group, working at the interface between the visual Arts and technology, envisioned, designed and built leading edge information systems, tools, and technology demonstrators in support of the visual arts, education, and the cultural community.
